If you're not going to make it so auto-dock flies your ship safely, missions shouldn't fail for hull damage caused by the auto-dock crashing your ship

If you don't go to the trouble of flying my type-9 through the mail slot properly, it should not be counted as my fault when that whale gets dragged along the entrance, costing me money and time and, because the mission fails, reputation. And if you think it should, then the starport should have to comp me for it.

The docking computer comes with a caveat, that it is not 100% reliable, if you install and use a docking computer you are accepting this caveat, it's recommended that pilots when using a DC remain at the controls at all times in case the docking computer has an issue;

While the automatic docking process is generally reliable, it is not foolproof. Other ships flying through an Access Corridor at high-traffic stations may not be recognized by the Standard Docking Computer, resulting in accidental collisions followed by fines or ship destruction. Sometimes, automatic docking may decide on an erroneous flight path that travels through objects, such as a station's exterior, which may also result in fines or ship destruction. These are fringe cases, however, and even if they occur, a wary player will still have time to interrupt automatic docking and avoid serious accidents.

This has always been the case in all Elite games as far as I am aware.

Some passenger missions fail if you take any hull damage. However, it must be hull damage, not shield damage. A "scrape" shouldn't inflict hull damage if you have shields.
