If you're wondering where Frontier's attention is directed at...

First off, I'm just sharing this because judging from the view count of 165 views on Youtube as of posting this, and the fact that the video is unlisted, I don't think this video has caught the eyes of some people wondering where Frontier's attention is directed at with regards to their list of supported games.

As a quick summary of this 4 month old video with regards to Elite Dangerous, there is little mention of Elite Dangerous apart from a small mention of supporting the game.

Here is the video if you're interested. (Edit 6 May: Changed reference to working video)

Looking at Frontier's financial calandar, lets remain optimisic on the future of Elite Dangerous development at least until after 31 May. Afterall, they may have things planned for the new financial year.

Secondly, the following is my personal opinion. I love Elite Dangerous and used to play it a lot up till Engineers came out, then I stopped for a while because the time investment in grinding and method of collecting materials was too time consuming for me. I recently came back before Odyssey to push my engineer progression after the materials update, which gave players 3 instead of 1 material, and have since invited 4 other friends to join me on Odessey.

We played for about 2 weeks? There were bugs of course but they weren't the main issue. The feedback I got from my friends was similiar in sentiment for myself. They felt that Elite Dangerous required too much time investment to play sustainably. i.e. We all have daily jobs and don't really have hours to dedicate to the mundane relogging grind, searching of Odyssey outposts for materials, long supercruise travel times, yet we still love the game. It just feels like a chore to play and not really friendly to casual players.

I know the game is meant to be "Hard", "Dangerous", whatever you want to call it. Everyone has differing opinions and I respect that. I just wish it was more casual friendly so I could log in for 1-2 hours a day and still feel like I'm making progress.

Thank you for reading the second part if you did.

Progress towards what?

When I play it's for the gameplay itself, as I've made all the progress I want to make and then some. Irony is that 99% of my "progress" sits parked in a hangar as I fly a shieldless Cobra into battle, which is way more fun than flying "end game" ships. Now I'll grant you that my Cobra has some modest engineering, but nothing that required me to play Elite as a full-time job. I'll also concede that I never fully appreciated the smaller, less-expensive ships until I got the "end game" ships and realized they actually took more away from my gameplay than they added. Maybe that's a lesson everyone needs to learn for themselves (well, at least the 10% of us who feel this way).

These days the only progress I'm interested in is moving the tier lines at a CG, and even then I'm only interested in CGs that are actually fun to play.

BTW - when I started playing, it was actually a lot harder to make progress than it is today, yet those early weeks are still my favorite memories of this game.

One of the things I liked about Elite is that it was a sort of mmo but more so, it had no treadmill. You didn't have to log in day to day just to "keep up". That stopped with the carriers, though true, you don't have to have a carrier.
Now, before those folks pop in and say "I got 50 bajillion years of upkeep in an afternoon", it isn't about if you can get the game money, its the fact that it exists at all.
Everything else, though, I'm pretty mellow about. I mean I would like a bit more action, there seems to be a lot of "waiting" gameplay in Elite, but its how Elite is.

I think the final slide, slide 10, is the most telling. They go on to talk about fiscal year 23 and 24...not one single mention of Elite.
They do: "that other game" which in addition to the absense of a single graph/slide featuring Elite numbers tell us way more than words.

Yeah, I did find Elite's conspicuously absent presence on the "money over time" graph. Not sure what to make of that one, really.

Would love to see the "Net cumulative cash flow" line for elite. Are they allowed to leave it out? It would be off the chart in the other direction assuming "100 developers"?

"Thats when we sold preorders for oddyssey"
"Thats when we built odyseey"
"Thats when we launched oddyseey"
"That's when we cut the team for oddysey"

He did say its almost in the right direction. And sounded quite mad at the game.

My armchair would be ship interiors could be done and sold individually as "PDLC" if they want to keep the game going, rather than just leaving it off the chart to investors and not admitting it ever happened. Also needs to be for the horizons client sorry. I'm guessing they're going for skeleton crew + arx on new players now?

To a large extent, the game adjusts to your progression with in it. I know it isn't necessarily what you want to hear, but the path is the goal. Frustration comes when you want to play a different way than your position allows.

Elite is supposed to take a long time. Really, a lot of the time, it is exploitative behaviour that lets some progress quickly. Enjoy it your way and best of luck finding the sweet spot.

Also, be aware that though there is no doubt quite a bit of overlap, technically a lot of teams / team members are almost certainly dedicated to a particular game. The fact that FD is publishing and developing other properties should not be seen as a sign that they are not spending development time on ED.

One silly question comes to mind - what happens with unspent ARX if the game shuts down? Having 10 eur in there atm :)
Not just ED, but similar games in general.
Do tokens, coins, arxes or whatever in MMOs, get converted and refunded to buyer/player or not?

The written document that was published at the time was quite widely discussed on the forum.

No they don't get refunded. It's one reason why Premium Currencies are not a good thing imo.
