Iffy Exploration Data Idea...

Just had this thought, and I don't really want to pester FD with it, but I was curious to see what others would think...

Don't ask why I thought of it. I have no reasons for this idea. Lol

Exploration Data Is Only Stored On The Ship Which Collected The Data
Currently, exploration data is just linked to "you". If you swap ships, it follows you. If you die, it's gone. Doesn't make much sense, logically, but it's essential for risk/reward gameplay.

What if, exploration data was stored in the ship where the data was scanned from...?
If you change ships, you are free to perform all sorts of shenanigans, without risk of losing your precious data.
But if you die in your exploration ship, the data is gone as usual.
You could go as far as using station services to transfer data from locally stored ships on to your current one, which would be handy for tidying up bits and pieces.

What do you think?

Like I said, I'm quite happy with the way things are now. And this idea is just one of those "what if" moments. I have no intention of submitting this idea to FD, unless it's hugely popular for some odd reason. Lol

It is another way of doing it.

When I first had my ship blow up and all the materials I had collected were still there in the new ship I was surprised.
I stopped worrying/thinking about it after that.

Exploration data is something special, what with your name going on a system as first discoverer, so maybe it's something to do with that.

I'm also ok with the way it is now.

I suppose if you're saving the data for an engineer or are in a hurry, you might not want to hand in the data at the same time as swapping ships, but I would say that most of the time, most people will hand in data as soon as they dock, and so won't be flying around with it.

If a mechanism was needed, I'd say that once you dock, any pending data is essentially safe, an electronic copy being made somewhere in the same intergalactic cloud that remembers how far you've travelled, how many jumps you've made, and how many systems you've visited ... regardless of where you are in the galaxy, when you last docked, or whether you've been killed.

So, once you've docked, your data is available from all ships (as at present), but you no longer have to worry about losing it ... though you still have to hand it in to get money or discovery rights.

That is a very good idea.

The list of things that you keep or lose after a ship loss really doesn't make any sense:

Lose: Exploration data, Cargo, Bounty Vouchers, Combat Bonds, Powerplay bonds, Wing Trade Dividends, Co-pilots.
Keep: Materials, Engineer data, 'unique' engineered components, mission data (for data delivery missions or gained from surface scans.)

I personally think we should lose everything. Or keep everything. At the moment, the punishment for certain types of player losing their ship appears to be a lot higher than for others.
