IGN: A pre review of ED video. Very accurate so far.

IGN offical 'pre game' review at http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/12/19/elite-dangerous-review

I think reviewer sums up problem with grinding for bigger ships well when he say's:

"Elite is an impressive game, but I suspect I can't remain perched between boredom and wonder forever. There are times when it feels too much like a classic grind, where I'm performing repetitive tasks so that I can make illusory progress toward ships and equipment that will let me do even more of the same repetitive tasks of a larger scale."

It's a solid review. There is a balance between grind and play, and we all know that the game certainly makes us ask the question 'When I have the ship of my dreams what will I do next?' quite often.

It was decent review, he's not wrong on any of his critiques. Although watching him SC and try to get to Clack Orbital was painful, I understand that video was to show off the game, but he made it look 10X harder than it actually is.

If you get to the part where he talks about combat you'll notice that he didn't do it much. He's trying to compare it to some other games and saying that it's a "series of firing passes" rather than, I guess, a real dogfight. He's saying that beginning weapons are quite ineffective, which makes me think he's not getting it :)

He's obviously in a hauler, so he didn't really do much yet. He's showing a video of him going 20k LS to a station and he even misses it. Readers/viewers will get an impression that it's pretty boring.

It was an okay video I'd say. Doesn't really touch on the combat aspects as much as he should of. That said, it's an early review, not final.

I have not liked any of the reviews on combat. Far too many times they say that it devolves to two players pointing head on at each other. The joust combat only happens if players let it, as soon as it gets like that I am able to determine that either..
-
A: I have made a mistake and have ended up foolishly head on with a ship that out-classes me
B: My opponent has mad a mistake and has ended up foolishly head on with a ship that out-classes him.

This is not really how the game combat 'is' as much as it is most 'un-creatively executed by poor piloting'
If pilots are not using all axis, flight assist off maneuvers, quick reversals, and power management then it is going to be a very quick, boring, routine, predictable outcome. Simple as that.
All it takes is both players to point at each other and shoot to compare a stat battle that at least one of them should have known they where going to lose head on.
The only time I end up going for the joust is when I am laughably outclassing the other vessel (and usually laughing as I charge head on guns blazing, unwavering). In this case I am expecting the other smaller ship to get out of the way or end up smeared on my windshield, teaching them to never go head on ever again."

I don't think reviewers are learning combat well enough to get a proper review on it. Nobody should expect to be good at it right away. The fact that games have to cater not only to the players to make it easy and digestible but the reviewers as well because they are not going to spend much time on it to get a worthy review in is kind of sad, and I have seen it more and more these days.
