I'll be testing: No weapons.

One of things that blew me away about Firefly was: Serenity didn't have any weapons. A few tricks, but they knew not to fight.

Pretty much since I decided to be an explorer I've been curious if this'll be a valid playstyle. I was a little scared when I saw that exploring will pretty much require combat in the description.

I want to test out this style ASAP. And basically my ship the Saviour's Haste. Will be built to run for it.

Any thoughts?

It's actually not completely absurd. You can jettison cargo which might help keep the NPC pirates off your back (maybe even the odd human one).

You might even last longer by not having any temptation to get into a scrap.

I assume you can take heat sinks and try being stealthy?

Return here and report your findings.

I applaud the concept, but I am skeptical of the implementation.

In the age of sail, merchant ships still packed guns to fight off pirates.

In Firefly, only the military really had weapons. The reavers had some weird industrial jury-rigged weaponry, and complete fearlessness / insanity. So it made sense that the Serenity could move about unarmed, as most places there was nothing to fight that you had a hope of winning against.

I've thought on this too, no weapons should mean more power available to the other systems, not much, but a tad more shield, and engine power.

That's a cool idea. Crazy, improbable and very likely suicidal, but very cool ;)

It'll be interesting to see how you get on.

I stated my intent to do the same, a while back. No telling how far I will get since unavoidable combat seems like an eventuality. Oh well. It's worth trying, anyway. :)

I still have the loaner pulse laser, and try not to deploy it. I've not gone the whole "remove it" route. I was just trying to roleplay my "won't fight" little character, see how it works out.

Badly, is the answer. So far I've been killed a fair few times, and have bagged two NPCs somehow, that's all. But hey, it's still a beta. Out at the edge things may be different.

I wonder, if there is no weight advantage to not having guns if a couple of mining lasers could be useful for an explorer, something else to bring back and sell?

This is already in place. You can go and disable your weapons and see that there is now less than 100% power drain.

It's clear that in future releases you'll have to more carefully manage your power and choose what systems you want powered up. Especially if you go with higer powered systems.

I flew trade runs without any weapons for a couple of days in early PB. With interdictions being so easy to flee from, it wasn't a problem.

It's an interesting feeling, being an unarmed trader. :)

I have over fifty runs, never fired a shot and just got me a Cobra. Even the Hauler is fast enough to escape NPC pirates, and I was lucky to not encounter any player trying to poke holes in my hull.
So being a trader in PB without shooting is doable.

I've been killed twice since Alpha 3.4 - both times were when I was playing while talking to friends, so my excuse is that my attention was distracted from the game.

So far it seems to be possible to play a non combat style and it will become much easier once single player is available if you want to go in that direction.

Maybe Frontier could throw those of us who like this style of playing a bone and provide some kind of alternative kit that could be fitted to hardpoints such as a long range scanner.

Make trade, not war. :D

Imma hafta try dis 'ere thing, come standard beta. :) (I've already decided to try to not kill, period :p)

That's a very interesting, and surprisingly sane view. It's not like we walk around shooting other people regularly in real life, yet in a game like this, we're expected to kill a few to a few hundred people every day just to conduct our business... Just goes to show how skewed a perspetive you can get from playing games I guess :).

I don't think it makes much difference whether it's MP or SP. I don't mean players won't be different and as they get smarter it'll be harder.

But I figure, not being so great at PvP, if I get drawn into it, I'll probably die.

So better from the start to configure my ship to run. And know when combat starts, my whole point is to escape.

i think you should try little different approach (unless your religion forbids using weapons at all) - avoid battle at all cost but when it's impossible have a lot of missiles and just vaporize your enemy, so basically your systems/engines will have more power and you can outfit your ship with bigger power plant/faster engines and instead of lasers/cannons have missile raks all over your ship, and if you cannot outrun just blow them ;)
