I'll be testing: No weapons.

One of things that blew me away about Firefly was: Serenity didn't have any weapons. A few tricks, but they knew not to fight.

Pretty much since I decided to be an explorer I've been curious if this'll be a valid playstyle. I was a little scared when I saw that exploring will pretty much require combat in the description.

I want to test out this style ASAP. And basically my ship the Saviour's Haste. Will be built to run for it.

Any thoughts?

My hauler went unarmed about while I had it. Didn't see much of a point arming the thing. Only died once from PvP too... and I wouldn't have died that time either if I had known about the heat buildup mechanics they had added along with the ship. Never made that mistake again. ;)

Interesting OP.

My own thought is I wonder if we are going to have mines? I hadn't noticed any being used if we do.

Anyway, I think that mines wouldn't count as being armed. I would definitely use mines on an unarmed trader if we had them. There were mines in frontier : elite so it seems like something we would have for elite dangerous.

Just a thought.

Lazy pirate! :p

Or did you mean you'd have them aboard to repel pirates? ;)

What we need is cry babies for pirates. :p Er, I mean, cry babies as in Firefly, not cry baby pirates. :D Although...

Space mines. You drop them behind your ship as a nice present to deter more maneuverable fellas. Really nasty when properly used.

*It's really a necessity for ships like the Anaconda that have the blind spot in the back where you can set all day and ping away with no repercussions.

Hope we see lots of gameplay that caters to this, however it presents a relatively difficult downside for PvP.

If your chance of escape is overly high, it's not going to be fun for anyone to give chase in the first place, and both you and they will be disappointed.

If your chance of escape is medium or too low, it will make many players risk averse: i.e. they'll tend to run multiple grindy runs with low margins rather than risk loading up their ship and losing everything to a pirate when the random numbers all roll against them.

But now you mention it, the idea of a salvage op would fit so nicely with this notion, and the risk/reward part is more tolerable at that point if cargo is made to affect ship performance: you can stay and fill her up but risk not being able to evade pirates, or you can say half a load is good enough and run early :)

Aw, shucks, I knew what you meant. :) Maybe I needed more smiles for the joke to work? :D Unless you have smiles off, of course, hmm...

A thought here, though -- what if an innocent party hits the mine? Crime! What if lunatics spray them all in front of stations? :(

Hmm. Perhaps a quick decay timer to avoid at least the latter?

It's really why groups have to work. And it depends on your ship. It might explain the continued popularity of the Cobra Mk III over say, Pythons and Anacondas. Obviously someone in a speed-rigged CM3 is going to have a better chance of someone in a speed-rigged Anaconda or Panther.

This'll be my preferred mode of play, the idea of using stealth and sneakiness to get the job done and explore is why I bought into ED so I really hope they implement upgrades that are specifically tailored to the exploring non-combatant.

Great topic, really enjoying the PB but just gets me more and more excited for the final game.

:D

I have to say, running with this theme in Beta and having sold my weapons on the sidewinder and the eagle it works very well. I DO have an advantage for jumping and fuel.

Screwed if I ever get interdicted by a viper though.
