Newcomer / Intro Illegal Missions / Unattainable Missions

I am based in a Hi Tech Fed major station, now and then I get offered missions to get artifacts, prototypes or other items with the message that this is illegal. Seems like easy money but if I return
with the goods and get scanned (always get scanned) will I be attacked/fined ? The rewards are too small for High Risk.

Secondly, I can see invitation missions which are unattainable because I already have the system permits
they give. Is this fouling up my promotion missions ? My Promotion missions seem to have dried up at
Chief Petty Officer.

Any thoughts ?

Learn to dock hot or cold.

Hot - boost boost boost - all the way to the letterbox, then throttle back and stop before you splat on the back end of the station.

Cold - Sit about 8km out, line up with the letterbox, turn off all systems, wait for your heat indicator to show, well, pretty much nothing, select FA off, activate thrusters and boost, turn thrusters back off, activate silent running and you'll glide towards the letterbox. Once you're close, turn thrusters back on, make any adjustments needed, and turn off silent running.

I find method 1 works well for me, because I'm impatient, and I learned to dock hot back in beta.

You can always practice in the tutorials...

Hi Z, For a crappy 20K, the possible splat on the back, or getting fried, just does not seem worth it. 250k and it might be.

1. Have a search for smuggling threads. There are several techniques, most of them over the top.

2. Don't worry about the broken mission messages. This bug has been around Forever, but does not impede your rank progressions

Alternatively, you can request docking, fly about 5km from the entrance.
Now line up with the slot, turn silent running on and use 1 heat sink .
As you get near the entrance, 1 more heat sink, then as you enter, slow and silent running off.

The silent running stops the ship heat escaping which reduces its visibility to scanners. You'll need to be careful at the entrance and inside because it also turns shield off

That's worked for me every time.

Hi cp2002, Sounds good but the rebuy is over 200k. I assume if given at an outpost there would be no risk ?

+ the neg effect on your rep

either wait for these missions to cycle out of the BB or find a outpost in the surrounding area.

l think the reward is not high enough to justify the risk at a starport

I've never used all these fancy-pants techniques for smuggling into a station.

I just get to approx 7km out, line myself up with the slot and full throttle towards the station, at about 2km deploy landing gear, make final trajectory adjustments, dive through the slot and dip down into the station to break line of sight.

This should get you into the station fast enough to stop any authority scans from completing, without need for shutting anything down, silent running etc.

If you pick up the illegal missions from outposts rather than stations you should be able to complete them with no hassle at all. As outposts are rarely, if ever, patrolled.

Works like a charm indeed.

While others have recommended silent running, I would suggest normal running at high speed. If you go in at 4 pips to ENG, the scans don't have time to complete.

It might be less safe, in that you could, potentially, redecorate the station exterior with the mix of your ship and your puréed remains (400m/s > 0 in a few metres is quite the deceleration - over 1,000G), but it's cheaper (why pay for something when there's a free alternative?) and loads more fun: There's nothing like that warm feeling spreading between your legs when you see there's a T9 coming the other way through the letterbox.

I always keep my rebuy cost, in case you were wondering.

That's the spirit! Exactly the sor tof thing I'm talking about!
