Currently, I'm doing an Illegal black box salvage mission. Can someone explain why that mission is illegal and what could go wrong if I try do it?

You may get attacked, ambushed when you try to pick them up. The black boxes may be illegal in the Station when you return to hand in the mission. So you will have to use stealth or speed not to get scanned.
It's illegal because you are stealing the blackbox. You're not recovering it for the rightful owner of the ship.

Why is up to you to ponder. And what could go wrong:
- Sometimes it actually happens that somebody else is there already to pick it up. (Means, be faster or dispose of him. )
- Sometimes it actually happens that somebody attacks you when trying to pick it up. (I once had an Anaconda, one FDL and one Viper attacking me when trying to pick up a blackbox. )
- If nothing else happens, you still have illegal cargo on board. Try to avoid being scanned when returning to the station. Use standard smuggling procedures to avoid the scan. Also check the mission. Some missions which make you carry illegal goods also demand that you don't get scanned. Getting scanned fails the mission.

The value of the fine is usually in my experience a percentage of the cargo value. So for a Black Box - not much in the grand scheme of things.
If you think you might be doing a few of these missions, fit a heat sink launcher.
