General / Off-Topic Illogical but Real Medical Mystery

First I want to warn that this thread is kind of gross, fortunately not visibly with any photos, but typed in such a way that will get you the feeling.

I remember, somewhere near 10 or 8 years ago there was a TV documentary on a family with their son having a very absurd medical incident, in fact I know that it was somewhere in North America. I can't really remember anything about it, but all I can remember was a boy child being rushed to the hospital after seeing what appeared to be his lower legs coated in blood, but no other damage was visible. The bleeding resulted in the boy eating some kind of breakfast that may of had a particular chemical in it which caused his blood vessels in the lower portion of his legs to burst out through his skin. I know, this doesn't make any sense.

The trauma staff were in such a panic, nothing you'd ever see in most ER situations, medical apparatus was thrown all over the place on the floor in panic and tons of large medical equipment was rolling in the room, crashing through stuff in front of them, all of that mess in exchange to desperately and quickly save the boy's life. What makes it more absurd is that none of this was acting at all-it was all real. Now this documentary just popped out of the blue and i'm very curious to understand whatever kind of medical incident happened that day. Doctors? Surgeons? Medical analysts? Any one else in the medical field that might have a clue to this?

And to cool everything off, fortunately the boy survived.

So due to all that bleeding, he felt the need to have breakfast. This is indeed an interesting medical case.

No. The boy ate breakfast before he bled. However, what makes it more ridiculous was the fact that he ate waffles before the bleeding occurred. I don't like to say things are impossible, but it seems to me that whatever was inside the waffles had a specific chemical or the boy had a very absurd allergic reaction that caused the lower portion of his legs to do this. There seems to be plenty of absurd medical incidents dating back from 1992 to 2007 that are yet to be understood, the majority of them were pediatric and/or only affected one individual or a small group of individuals rather than an epidemic--For example, the mystery of Gloria Ramirez. Either that or the TV documentary crew were on drugs.

I have an amateur interest in diseases, because they're so morbidly fascinating. And from reading about them, and learning a bit more about health than I should (I am now a hypochondriac), I know that there have been (and continue to be) absolutely ludicrous health scares in popular culture.

A reaction like the one you described would not be a one off. Someone else must have had something similar.

What you describe isn't an allergic reaction though. An allergic reaction is when the bodies acquired immune system deciding to fight against invaders that aren't really there. A full on serious allergic reaction is where the immune system brings out all the big guns, opening blood vessels to let macrophages wander around your system (AKA inflammation) and telling your body to increase mucous production. It's a fascinating thing, the immune system.

If you like medicine watch Dr Ollers youtube channel.

His 'medical minute' vids are thoroughly awesome.

If you're of a more scientific persuasion then Dr Campbells vids are amazing.

(Dr Campbells books are also fantastic).

Here is a lecture of his on the venous disease of the legs, which might yield some answers to what it is you're looking for, unfortunately I could only last 8:23 before I started to feel queasy.
