Illuminated Avatar in Beta is rubbish in VR

I haven't seen any one else mention it but I can't be the only VR user with beta access who is annoyed by the sourceless illumination of the Commanders body in the cockpits in the beta.

When I look down, it is like I am glowing!

Notes from the current beta patch make this look to be a decision by FD related to making the player avatar visible in dark cockpits.

• Added cockpit chair based lighting (small amount of ambient to stop avatars being completely unlit in dark environments) to all ships where it was missing

It would be nice to have a toggle for this as when on the dark side of a planet or turned away from a star, I look down and there I am, glowing brightly.

But hey, at least I know Ready Brek is still available in the 33rd Century.

What ship? They said it would vary by ship. Also, what's your gamma setting?

I was in a Keelback and didn't notice it, but I'll look again. I have about 3 notches in gamma and have also edited the graphics config override file to make things darker. With brighter settings it may be more noticeable.

Personally, I have always HATED sitting in the dark while flying my ship, to the point where I'm constantly debating whether I want to turn up gamma so I can see around me, or turn it down so outside my ship looks properly dark. I can't win either way.

It would be better, though, our ships' designers installed this revolutionary new technology in our ships called a light switch, so we could decide for ourselves whether we want illumination or not.

Yes, and please make it a dimmer switch. [yesnod]

Agreed. I switched back to the standard black suit to minimise glare.

I've mainly been flying my Python. I'll get a screenshot.

It is the fact that the light is sourceless that is most annoying, like you are surrounded by a nimbus of light.

It does not affect the lighting in other parts of the cockpit though so those are still dark, which is daft.

Hopefully attached screenshots. In the second one you can see how the lighting in the rest of the cockpit is unaffected.

All of the ship cockpit lighting should be user controlled for brightness. Yes, the UI has a control, but some ships like the Asp Explorer, for example, have other cockpit lights which remain on and have fixed brightness. All of those in any ship should have a brightness control as well. They'll never add it...I'd pay money for it...like a buck...

I have a blue suit in the beta but am going back to the black if it's not illuminated. Unnecessary lighting in VR creates unwanted eyestrain unnecessarily.

I finally got a chance to look, and in a grey suit I looked down and my hands were very bright, and looking further my legs were even brighter. It's really way too bright, and there is no obvious source for the light. Then I tried a black suit, and even it has some bright highlights, though not as bad as the other suits.

Funny, but I had no problem flying closer to a sun and having the sunlight light me up. The instruments should light you up some, and maybe some other ambient light, but this just too bright.

Is there a bug report or other thread? I'll have a look.
