I'm a noob and I have questions

Hello folks. Hopefully someone knows the answers to these....
1. How can I identify human players vs NPCs? And where the heck can I find them?
2. What is my in game name? Is there a way to change it?
3. How am I supposed to make money? I had almost 9000 bucks, then I bought a laser and my ship got destroyed... Basically, earning loot seems to take forever. I've tried fighting in the conflict zone and also buying low/selling high. The biggest profit I could make in a run was like 600. Tips?

Greetings Commander Crispy and welcome,

Try searching in the Forum search menu, or Google.
All the answers you seek are there.

For example I looked up this one for you.
Change name :)

All the tips you require are at your finger tips. ;)

don't forget to choose a faction side. 350 Credits a kill you can also get a mission which can add more credits once you bag the right number. If you die you don't get the credits but your skill will improve and your standard sidewinder is returned to you. Only invest in bigger and better when you can afford the insurance.

Do hauls that also tie in with the delivery missions can give a nice boost to the income for the trip.

Soon you will be trucking around 100 gold making 80K per trip.

I bet all the pirates heard that.

Hi Crispy!

Players will have "CMDR" before their name. As far as making money, check out the galaxy map and find a good trade route. I bought a hauler after playing a couple of hours. Another thing you can use for now is Slopey's trade tool.

Good luck!

Krow is absolutely right! There are quite a few threads that could have been remedied with the search option..

...But as it's slow at work...

1. On your radar you'll see ships indicated by triangular figures. Solid means they are NPC and outlined means they are human.

2. I believe your in-game name is displayed on your right panel (should be CMDR Backer#xxxxxx) and to change it follow that link Krow was nice enough to find for you :)

3. Making money at first is not necessarily difficult but... repetitive. Once you have docking/trading down you'll be able to purchase a hauler in no time. That will give you more cargo capacity to make more money and eventually make it to whatever ship you desire! My fav so far is the viper :D

My most important piece of advice to avoid starting over is leave enough cash for insurance to buy back your previous loadout. Another would be to keep maximum power to systems when engines/weapons are not in use (to strengthen shields).

I'd be happy to help with lucrative trading if you have more questions and feel free to add CMDR WDeja for a wingman

Good luck, pilot!

One tip I don't see getting bandied about is to always check the bulletin board upon docking at a station. Most of the missions you'll see will only net you a few hundred credits, but the courier ones involve transferring data or papers that take up no cargo space, so that's instant profit.

Other times you get lucky and someone will be asking for a short haul of one ton of cargo with a payment of 1000-4500 credits or so upon delivery, and those are ALWAYS worth doing when starting out. The downside is that if you blow the delivery, the payment becomes a fine. But it's well worth the risk.

Always check the bulletin board.

One other thing - if you're not going to be doing combat, ditch the loaned lasers in your Sidewinder. Getting rid of the extra mass gives you longer jump range and will about double the number of systems available to you.

Good luck, Commander!

Go to LP 98-132 and look for Unidentified Signal Sources. Some of them will contain gold you can sell at the black market in Freeport (the same system). 4 tons will net you 20.000 Cr.
Some of the USS's will be ambushes. If ships jump in when you scoop the gold, retract the cargo scoop and jump out right away.
If you play online it's dangerous around the Freeport station.

Per radar previous comments solids are NPCs. Hollow are Live players.

Also a triangle on the radar means that their weapons are deployed. A rectangle means no weapons deployed.

Welcome aboard crispy, fellow noob here!

One piece of very important advice I will give (spoken from experience) is when you are leaving a station with any cargo keep your landing gear out (acts as a speed inhibitor) and keep it slow until you have left the station. I have crashed a few times being impatient immediately after take off and have now learned to be patient until I leave the station...

Thanks so much guys.

The search thing is definitely not an option. Even using Google, to search this site only, didn't turn up any results. I honestly don't get it haha.

This. But with one addition: after a while you'll get a feeling, which cargo has the possibility to generate a "special demand" mission on which station.

For example the Azeban City station generates both "Crop Harvesters" and "Terrain Enrichment Systems" demands. The point is - the best way to make use of them is to accept them while you already have the cargo in question in your hold. Then you can give the cargo (earning at least double the normal profit for this commodity) and immediately accept the mission again, trade in, etc etc. If you have a Hauler full of Terrain Enrichments, you can earn over 20k in one go.

It's just important to check the mission board BEFORE selling the cargo for just the normal profit.
You also have to get lucky.
A good way to improve your odds is to make a cargo run before stopping playing, check the board and if the mission is not there, log out and try to get the mission the next time you're playing.
