Newcomer / Intro I'm back!

I'm not exactly a newcomer. I backed the Kickstarter, played the alpha and beta, went to the launch party, and played for a couple of years. Then I kind of lost interest and did other things - World of Warcraft, Payday 2, Minecraft, a bunch of other things.

Then last week-end a couple of friends told me they'd picked up Elite cheap on Steam and had started playing a few weeks back! So I got back in the cockpit a couple of days ago.

On Saturday afternoon we flew to Maia, scanning systems on the way so I've learned about that new mechanic. One of my friends melted her docking computer while fuel scooping, so I found out how to copy key bindings across and docked for her! First manual docking attempt in... er, maybe 7.5 years? Nailed it first time. Just a few scrapes on the underside because I underestimated the size of an Anaconda!

Then I came home and flew solo to Deciat.

So I'm back in the saddle, enjoying the new mechanics! Just need to go find some Sulphur now, I think that involves figuring out how mining works. I think I have a mining ship parked at Jameson Memorial but it might need a re-fit if mining has changed.

Any tips for an old salty dog coming out of retirement?

Anyone else here that was at Duxford?

Sulphur was (and still is) a surface prospecting material. Get a SRV, drop on a suitable planet (icy worlds are not a good choice...) and hunt those signals.

Yes, you can also get Sulphur (and other materials) from mining - but the emphasis is on "also".

Welcome back!

As for tipss - that's a huge subject! :D Anything in particular you want to know?

Some broad brush changes:

  • Exploration mechanics changed
  • Mining mechanics changed
  • We got fleet carriers
  • We got two new ships - Mamba and Krait II
  • We can get out of our ships/SRVs and do on-foot stuff.

Does this spec look ok for a mining ship? Is the Phantom the right choice of ship?

The guide I followed used an Asp Explorer but I thought this would be better as I have the cash for it (only just!).
I just updated the link to show 7D power plant as I can't afford a 7A.

I would say instead of a 7D power plant use a 6A. It will save you 12t of mass. Personally I always go for the lowest A-rated plant, because the A-rated have the best heat efficienty, and undersizing saves mass. I would do the same with the PD (I usually choose the smallest A-rated that allows for near-permaboosting), and I would go for A-rated thrusters. For core mining you might need all the mobility you need.

I would also probably go for a class 5 shield and use the class 6 for a cargo rack. Something along these lines. Not sure if the 4A PD allows for enough boosting, I cannot find the boost interval on Coriolis. If you choose a Phantom, Mk.II or Python depends mostly on your attention span, because with otherwise identical builds they allow for different cargo capacities. I core mine in a 192t Python, but I never fill it up :).

Oh, I see the 6A PP is still very expensive. So the above goes for: If you can afford it :).

What I did on my third account to kickstart it: Fit a Cobra for core mining. I made about ten to fifteen million per run, with each run being pretty short, and then ditched the Cobra to outfit a larger core miner.

I think I can't afford it... will have to check in-game to see if my discount is enough.

Good points. I'll swap over the cargo rack and shield generator.

A Cobra core miner with 12t cargo and 6 in the bins runs you just above 7 million. I'd give it a try until your credit balance is more comfortable :). Core mining in the Cobra is fun and the sessions are much shorter :).

(edited for sense)

Bulk tax? You get less money for large amounts? Oh, I see, it's demand related. So I need to find a nearby selling point that had high demand for the stuff I'm mining. I'm guessing there's a tool for that, let me ask Inara... yep, she seems to have the data. Thanks!

The YouTube video I'm basing this on has given away his mining location, is that likely to have reduced the payout with more people going there? Should I go find my own location, or will the known locations be "good enough"?

Also what materials should I be looking for? Void Opals used to be the hotness when the video was made but it looks like they're a lot less lucrative now.

Be warned that there is a bug with the PWA. Core asteroids that light up really brightly in the distance stop glowing when you get closer. Inspect them anyway even if they don't light up anymore, you can see the fissures on the surface. They are seen best with night vision on, and look kind of like a squashed version of the old LucasArts logo ;).

Am I doing something wrong? I have the Pulse Wave set up on primary, but it isn't working. Shouldn't it send out a pulse that lights up the asteroids? Or do I need to charge it up somehow?

Ah! Hardpoints!!

Depands on what you want, really. Opals and LTDs are interesting to mine, but hard to sell at a good price. There are other "modern" minerals that are slightly easier to mine and sell at a consistently better price - I just can't remember their names.
In terms of pure Cr/hr, though, laser mining for Palladium and Platinum in overlapping hotspots seems to take the crown. Search for miner's tool on edtools - that'll get you both mining spots and sell points - if you don't prefer to dump your haul (at a discount) on a fleet carrier, there are usually a few nearby the listed mining spots.

Press the fire button that you have assigned it to. Hardpoints must be deployed and there needs to be energy in the WEP.
Yes, t was hardpoints! The surface scanner was working so I forgot that some things need hardpoints out and some don't.

I think I made about 30M in one run. I botched most of the asteroid detonations, but it was fun!

Is there a difference in mining yields between Horizons and Odyssey, or is it just luck or bad locations?

And is it normal for prices to fluctuate like this or have mining goods prices crashed pretty hard in the last couple of days?

I mine in Horizons as I like to see what is in front of me and the ship's lights in Oddity are a joke.

Prices don't look that bad on INARA* but I have not been doing much mining this week apart from Bill whosit's 50 Bromellite for my alt.
