General / Off-Topic I'm building a game seat

After a month or two of use I discovered a couple of minor problems. One I can't fix, but the other I can and it will mostly fix the first one.

1. The length between the seat & the front section is to long. I made it this long because the slide out keyboard tray fouled up the joystick & throttle. My poorly thought out solution was to make these pipes longer. After some thought, a better solution would of been to make the joystick mounts further outboard. I can't cut and shorten those pipes now. It's all glued up.

2. The Joystick mount tables were exactly sized to fit a Saitek X52 joystick. This didn't allow for any movement of the joystick.

3. While the right hand table is the right HEIGHT for a mouse pad, it was too small. This made playing FPS games harder than it needs to be.

Solution : Make new joystick mount tables. I've decided that I Might get a Thrustmaster Warthog at some point, and if the X52 fails, I will. So I looked around and found out what size the Warthhog base is and made them that size. The other part of the solution was that instead of mounting them centrally on the uprights, they are in the central rear most corner. This moves the joystick further forward and outward from the seat.

So, now I can slide further forward, which brings the keyboard closer to me and allows for the joystick to not foul the keyboard tray.

If you compare this image with the ones from the previous post you can see the difference. I've also moved it in the room and set up everything. I don't believe I'll be moving it again for a while.

The PC on the left of the seat is the house server. It's a Dual P3-933 IBM with 1GB RAM. The game PC is to the right, with the Rancour Monster on top.

The only forseeable problem now is, if I get 3x widescreen monitors, they won't fit on the table top as it currently is. I'm not sure what my solution to this would be, but I suspect I'd make a new table top and sit it on the current table top.

I'm using one of these with 3 x 22" widescreens, which can be seen here:

The base looks a bit of a beast, but from the size of your monitor table it looks like it'll fit quite nicely. I've got a minor issue with mine, but that's nothing to do with the stand itself - the centre monitor I have isn't natively VESA mountable, and the 3rd party VESA mount pushes the screen much further forward relative to the side monitors. Net effect is that the 3 screens are much less 'curved' than they could be.

Anyway, with 3 natively VESA mountable screens, it'd go well with your sim pit :)

Just pop your stuff up on your hosting system of choice (I use Microsoft sky ... OneDrive). Then "insert a link". Or you can even just drop the link in anyway.

If you want to inline the image you need to hit the"Insert Image" link.

And you can't do any of it in the 'quick reply' system.

My seat has been working just fine. It's been well over 6 months now. I've added Velcroe straps to my X52 to hold the thing solid.

I also changed from a cheapo keyboard to a Ancient 80's IBM Model M keyboard. And somewhat surprisingly, the extra clickiness and feel of the Model M improves the system and feel of everything. I hate to say it, but I will anyway, it increases my immersion somewhat.

I think your wife has another

just kidding , the seat look great and comfortable.
I'm building one my self.
I use a Mercedes chair in combination with a old leather seat.
it going nicely ,and will post it when its done.

Good effort - been looking into doing something like this - the duct makes it light enough to move around, though I'm considering modding it a tad for Elite - I like the way the legs are held in place in the game itself, so thinking of making a leg rest section, where I'll probably mount pedals for yaw at a later stage.

I wa soriginally looking at using 32mm tubing, though, not 50mm. So, now I'm starting to wonder if, perhaps, 32mm was getting a bit too keen...

Also, electrical wholesalers (TLE, JR Turks etc) will have these bits cheaper than bunnings.

On a side note, I'll probably be using self tappers, or screws/buts to hold it together rather than glue. I'm not altogether sure if I can get it through the doorways and halls to my bedroom (where I play), so I like the idea of being able to get it into smaller bits..

Anyway,it'll be much nicer than my Teh Awesome Command Chair™ which took about 20 minutes...

Z...

Any chance you can whip up plans for your build?

The changes I made are insigificant from the original found at
http://www.isrtv.com/forums/topic/681-simul8r-mark-ii-pvc-plans-pg-9-post-175-donations-accepted/

The only changes I made are adding the bits in for the joystick mounts.

I'd be surprised if 32mm pipe is think enough to have the strength required.

I found I couldn't easily find class 15 pipe, which is what I wanted. So I went with Class 18. It's much more solid and heavy.

Definately get the bits from http://www.pipeonline.com.au/subcatDisplay/PRESSURE++FITTINGS++PVC
but buy the pipe locally. It's just to big & bulky to ship ....

Kinda curious what the final PVC measurements were. I'm aiming to set up something like this, but I am garbage at actual design.

It's holding up most excellent. With the over sized class 18 pipe I used, it's grossly over built. Nothing moves, nothing squeaks. Nothing has failed.

The table top doesn't move even though it isn't held down by anything other than gravity.

I recently bought some VKB T-Rudder pedals and they fitted in perfectly well.
