I'm Calling for a Massive Community Goal

Something that gives Frontier a year to develop.. they can write it however they want. But we need to be engaged in a massive "GOAL" to this game.

I'm calling for a larger story other than politics. Something that is "galactic". An overarching goal for people beyond the trivialities of local warfare and control issues.

Add some philosophy to the game. Add some MEANING to the game. Right now it is all dry and mundane and scientific. As much as I actually do want more science in this as far as exploration is concerned I also can see all the missing emotion and narrative. What is the point of this? Why are humans the only sentient organized lifeform in this galaxy? Shouldn't we be bumping into some other new races that will eventually turn our world and perceptions upside down? I'm not talking thargoids. I'm saying this is a HUGE GALAXY and there is nothing about it other than grinding for credits and doing 1-3 stage chores for credits.

Community goals added a greater good we could work toward such as putting in remote stations. Now lets add a HUGE goal we all need to work on.

All these artifacts have been collected and a secret meeting took place between all the major factions. They assembled the information and found that once put together is pointed toward a section of the galaxy difficult to reach. Practically on the other side. All ships who have been sent to that area have not returned or came back with nothing.

After this mission all the factions started announcing these new lofty goals. They decided that this couldn't be kept secret.

Example 1: The president of the Federation has commissioned the building of an Expeditionary Force to establish a base of operations on the far side of the galaxy as a launching point to investigate the sources of these unknown artifacts. It will take a lot of resources to build several capital ships and stations large enough to make the journey.
a) We petition people to deliver these resources to these locations.
b) We petition explorers to bring back information from this particular section of the galaxy and all routes along the way.
c) We petition people to donate credits and earn reputation points

This buys them 4 months of people collecting and they can build a few new class ships. It may take a year for it to all launch but the armada or EF would stop off every month at certain points along the galaxy as a refueling point for ships to visit and bring more supplies to.

Example 2: The Alliance not to be outdone also commissions a similar mission with a different method involving a giant space station built inside a giant asteroid instead of a fleet. Called the "Crimson Dwarf" ;) this will protect it during its long journey to the other side of the galaxy. During the collection phase the FD team has time to build said station for the story line.

Example 3: The Empire will not make their plans known as to what they will be doing. Many covert operations will need to take place to uncover what they are doing.

BOOM - there you go. One MASSIVE huge year long community goal that all playstyles can contribute to and benefit from. Who wouldn't want to participate in this.... then by next year they can unveil the thargoids or whoever they want.

The goal is for all 3 of these factions to all inch their way across the galaxy .. and make it a race. Which side will you contribute to?

How do you know that the past CGs won't tie together in later events?

Maybe what you want is already going on, but you don't see the big picture? I can see the Obsidian, Emperor's Dawn, Exploration CG, and Artifacts damaging stations as all rolling together at some point.

Which is to say it is a great idea... that might be forming right under our noses.

I don't doubt they have something like this planned. But it isn't apparent and right now if they were to start something like this officially with just single community goals ramping up and adding more over time at least people would KNOW there is a larger purpose and goal coming.

Who knows what would happen along the way? Maybe one side will set up a community goal to disrupt the construction of the EF by sabotaging trade missions and resupply ships? This could delay the federation etc.

The point is - they need to unveil something ... something BIG we can all choose a side and get behind it and GET REWARDED for the effort.

Fighting the war on Thargoids. (not mere interdiction in which space, but all-out war on their systems, bases and capital ships)

Oh what a war that would be...

Right but lets make it deeper. Instead of destroying them we must understand them. Show empathy and evolve beyond the "destroy anything that is not us" mentality.

It has been stated that how the first CMDRs interact with the Thargoids when they encounter them will set the tone for the relationship.

Depth is there.

Philosophy?

The average ED player still hasn't pondered over "why does the Alliance allow dictatorships when they call themselves advocates of equality, hurr durr got you there buddies".

Are you serious? We are talking about the human race. We are talking about people who have destroyed minorities and others everywhere we've ever gone. Whatever makes you believe we'd not do that again?

I know why. Lord Ventinari.

Absolutely. But this means developing real content. Not algorythm based repetition which repeats and makes the entire game boring. Content costs a lot of money. So we will most probably never see that.

The Alliance is for equality and democracy for the same reasons why the Federation is for democracy: to fool the population and to hide who has the real power. The corporations.

In the Federation the industrial corporations have the power, they need poor but educated citizens that think they can become powerful by hard work.

In the Alliance the trading companies have the power. They need free trade (trade imperialism) and don't care about the population as long as they buy stuff from the trade companies. It doesn't matter what government type a system or station has as long as there is free trade with conditions that are very favorable for the big trade companies.

Those in power in the Alliance and Federation have chosen the easier way to control the population compared to the Empire. The Empire still thinks that wasting money for suppression of the population by force and paying for a slave workforce is something useful.

It has nothing to do with philosophy and it's pure politics and propaganda.

That is why I'm an advocate of them developing a content tool then allowing it to be released. With premade API elements it could be pretty easy for a user to do.

Insert text here ... $missiontext "help I'm being repressed!" Go to $planet in $system and look for $specialpersonname and $action this person. If $action is unobtainable try $thisaction and if the result is $resultA you will receive $rewardA and if it is $resultB you get $rewardB

$specialpersonname $chat will be sent when found etc..

They handle the under the hood mechanics of making it happen. It can be expanded from there to include more variables and scripting options as time goes by.

They could even sell the module for real cash for those of us who want to make our own missions and storylines for people to follow.

Maybe after all this time their agenda has changed? Could make for a tense situation...

And this is why we will have Thargoids as enemies rather than allies..sharing all that ship and weaponry goodness with us..to better kill each other with!

Right with you on this OP. I've been ranting about this in the community goals thread for a long time.

They don't even need to create new storylines, there are loads of potentially epic ones that they have teased or simply forgotten about. For example: Emperor's Dawn, the Unkown Artifacts, what happened to the president... and the vice president! Who ordered the hit on the Emperor, and any number of the Patreus conflicts that threatened to spill over.

It's like they're waiting for something. If so they're dragging their heels for too long. For such a populated galaxy it feels 'unrealistic' that so little is happening aside from petty system conflicts. Where, for example, is the fanatical religious sect threatening to sweep across humanity? Where's the drama?

I agree....We must all try and understand what the dev...sorry... I mean the 'Thargoids', and what their ultimate plans (if any) are. ;)
Ok, so their leaders wear jazzy sweaters and sport bushy beards (some of 'em) but that's not really a basis for blasting them to oblivion on sight surely?....or have I just broken the 'immersion factor' in the game?........:D
.
Jack :)

Op, you just described the UA mystery. I think once it becomes more fleshed out, then the wider long term community impact will be more concrete.
