It has been stated that how the first CMDRs interact with the Thargoids when they encounter them will set the tone for the relationship.

Depth is there.

If it was to be me, the tone would be set based on my "let's get the hell out of here".
 
Many threads have been asking for this, but it's all stuff the devs have already tried to give us. Between CGs and the intended use of PP, I would argue FD has already tried to implement the epic sort of goals we all want to see.

For example OP says, "The goal is for all 3 of these factions to all inch their way across the galaxy .. and make it a race. Which side will you contribute to?"

Well the idea of competing factions is all over the game already. Minor factions fight for influence and start wars for control of stations/systems and also star wars to push out waning minor factions.
PP factions compete to hold onto their current systems (undermining, fortification) and to gain new systems (expansion, preparation).

It sounds like what OP is asking for is very similar to how PP is intended to work. Multiple sides and you can support your side however you choose. Of course PP is broken for various reasons, but why would your idea for a "massive CG" work better than what FD has already given us?

Yeah I guess what they need to do now is have each POWER have some sort of purpose other than expanding. Right now the process of expansion is boring as hell with a lack of variety and reward. Some of the chores are just not worth it and the payout is not worth it and even the equipment is not worth it when you can make more credits doing other things. A lot of us explorers want to travel far but the process (at least until now that we can land etc) was boring. They gave us the ability to repair/refuel now for long trips. But one of the main goals in this game is going to be 1) expand to all parts of the galaxy and 2) defend your home/power/faction from a) others and b) aliens

I'm just saying lets set ONE MASSIVE goal that lasts a year with payouts every month and small progress like they are doing with the pleades station but on a larger scale and more factions. Involve fleets and giant stations and massive undertakings.
