I'm concerned about the VR transition to Odyssey FPS

I posted up my concerns in the main EDO forum but it didn't get much traction.

My main concern is that we might be left with the current status quo i.e. an awful 2D projection of Odyssey in our headsets.

OK some may like this and it could be an option but I was under the impression that we'd be getting the ability to leave VR and switch to a fullscreen FPS type implementation (like every FPS game).

I'll be honest I can't play Odyssey with the 2D headset projection so the alternative is to:

a) Ditch VR altogether.

OR

b)

1. Quit ED.
2 Change setting to 2D
3. Restart ED

Do your FPS stuff

4. Quit ED.
5 Change setting to 3D
6. Restart ED

Of course you can simplify this process somewhat with DrKai but it's still a very poor solution.

Does anybody else feel this way and if so how can we get FD to see the light?

Although I answered in the other thread, I’ll reiterate what I said there - FDev have said VR isn’t being tested in Odyssey at this time, so us VR players getting to try it in Phase 1 is a bonus. What we’re seeing isn’t the final implementation so certain things aren’t working as expected.

Taking my headset off doesn’t automatically revert to flatscreen on the monitor which is what I think may happen in the final release - but I am able to select 3D “off” in the Graphics menu and my game reverts on-the-fly to my flatscreen monitor without having to restart the game. I can also jump straight back into “HMD Headphones” VR mode while still in-game.

Seeing as I can do this without restarting the game or going back to the main menu, I suspect this will be an automatic change in the future.

Thanks! I really didn't realise you could flip between the two whilst still in game, this is reassuring but like you I hope the transition will be improved beyond that.

But there may be performance implications since SteamVR will still be running. An alternative is to implement a MSFS2020 model where VR is completely enabled or disabled via a hot key (i.e. CTR-TAB).

X3 Rebirth had live VR / non-VR switching in 2017, just by taking the headset off or putting it on. It's a solved problem.

Search for "Switching between controllers and in or out of VR on the fly". Specifically, it says:

It is possible to switch between different controllers on the fly or use them in most combinations.

If switching from either the Oculus Touch Controller or the Vive Controller to a different input device, it is possible to automatically hide the controllers from your view until you use them again. This is set by toggling "VR Controller Auto-Hide" in the Game Settings submenu accessible through the Options Menu.

It is also possible to switch in and out of VR on the fly by simply putting the headset on, or taking it off.

2017. Solved problem.

Even in the early alpha it flips for you, it goes black for a second or two when entering\exiting a ship and then you get the greyspace+screen on foot projected.
No menu shenanigans or hotkeys needed.

I also wouldn't worry much over wether this will be what we get forever.
That is a certainty.
FD lacks the imagination to do this well, pure and simple.

As for the walking around stuff, it was what I expected, a sad version of what the citadel experience was in mass effect 2, yes, ME2, not 1.
