I'm confused...

Greetings CMDRS

So, I took a hiatus from the game last year and came back in March of this year. I have a few questions about things.

First, Horizons. If I buy Horizons do I only get to land and drive around on planets for a year before the season pass runs out?

Second, update versions. Which number is relevant to my game? Without Horizons. 2.1? 1.6? π?

Third, the Engineers sound cool but if they are linked to Horizons and season passes... then how would that work for those with just the base game?

So yeah I am confused a bit. It took a while for my simple brain to understand Powerplay, so please type slowly as you reapond. Thanks!

1. nope good forever.

2. 1.6 without Horizons.

3. The engineers update applies to both version of the game.

Base game is on 1.5, Horizons is on 2.0. If you buy Horizons you'll have a season (year?) of updates, after which you can still drive around on planets.
We don't know yet exactly which elements of 2.1 will be common to 1.6; the patch notes aren't released/ready yet.

This part hasn't really been explained well, but given that engineers are on the planets it would seem you cannot get their stuff without having horizon.
However, importantly, the loot system incoming with 2.1 as well, is part of the base game for everyone, so potentially you could loot something usable?

2.1 is Horizons first update, 1.6 is everything that's included in the base game when the update is released.
With the 'season pass' you get all updates released for this season.
And this is permanent, so you don't need to pay again for the same functionality. Ever.
Think they said engineers are only for people who have Horizons, so you won't get these updates.
Other new stuff marked as 2.1/1.6 in the new newsletter will be available for everyone.
In case you haven't seen it yet: http://community.elitedangerous.com/newsletter120
Edit: ninja'd to death.. :)

I don't think engineers are gated to only planetside, but please correct me if I am wrong..

Thank you for the quick and informed answer. This is seriously what I like about 90% of this forum. Ask, ye shall recieve.

They have been mentioned to only be on planets, so you will need horizon.
Does it suck for those that don't have horizon? yes, but for xbox users it is on the way, for those that can't afford horizon, yes it sucks, I've been in that situation, but personally I don't want a game I enjoy held back from expanding just because I can't afford it.

Horizons not yet on Xbone (seriously, micros quiche should have embraced this term) but what about mac? I don't have one, but if engineers are Horizons only and we only get cool things from engineers, Mac and Xbox users are gonna scream bloody murder.

While I 'sort off' agree.

Mac's can use bootcamp and get great performance with horizon to solve the problem. They have an alternative, and the problem with Mac's and why they can't give horizon sits squarely in Apple's lap, and no one else, because of the lackluster implementation of opengl.

Xbox one, yeah, these can't get horizon yet, which sucks, but it is a limitation of the console, lets face it, they COULD probably get horizon right now if they were fine with running it on what would be LOW on PC, but they aren't going to be fine with that, and compared to a modern powerful PC able to run on ultra, consoles are quite a bit weaker, it is a fact of a console, that needs to get worked around, good news is, FDev has all but confirmed it is 'coming' but it clearly isn't an easy thing.

So yeah, it is a consequence of choices really, as much as I probably sound snobby saying so. PC's are the best gaming machines, as long as they don't run OS X, because Apple decides some weird things when it comes to using, high performance standards that everyone else embraces.

See, I love this game. As is. I have been playing Elite since 1985. C=64 FTW! And if buying a season pass is a way to continue this game, then so be it. I used to give $60USD to EA Sports for roster updates on a yearly basis until I wised up.

Thanks all for clearing up my confused state. Now I can go back to "work" while tabbing over to theory craft my Clipper updates... lol!

Regarding Xbox, in one of the announcements today they mentioned that there's another important announcement coming for Xbox users ... could be Horizons

I'm not going to lie, the whole way with how the updates and season pass thing and what works with what and what update applies to both and can you fly with folks from either version of the game and what can you do with and without the season pass and if you need to buy base game and then purchase the season pass after or a one time purchase is VERY VERY confusing to new folks wishing to play the game and i honestly couldn't explain it very well to any of my friends.

I don't know about Xbox, but as a former Mac ED player who just bought a PC in order to play Horizons, I don't think there is much energy left in the Mac user base to keep on screaming when it comes to Horizons. It is pretty well understood at this point that, barring some wholly unforeseen change from either Apple or Frontier, there won't be a Horizons for the Mac in the foreseeable future, and that the Mac OS X version of ED is only going to be getting core game updates from now on (I'm not sure how long it will even be getting those, to be frank). Most Mac users who want Horizons have given up on the shouting and have moved to Windows to continue playing the game at this point, either via Bootcamp or (in my case) with dedicated Windows hardware.

Well, your explanations to your friends could probably be improved if you used more punctuation. And you could use shorter sentences.

I've had an obsession with commas but totally unable to using the full stop like almost ever since high school and i don't know why XD
