I'm getting the heck out of here...

going on a tour, not that I finally decided on getting an asp.
I've upgraded just about everything to "a" category, have the best scanners I can afford.
first question, where are some "must visit" areas?
And second, if I want to go beyond civilized world, how do I even begin plotting my course?
What supplies are a "must" for this type of journey? (I have the auto-repair and fuel scoop).

You remember that scene in The Last Crusade, where Indy steps on to the "invisible bridge of faith" or whatever......it kind of feels like that leaving civi space for the first time.......just, take the step.....it will be "ok"...... :)

Get rid of some of the A stuff and fit D! Weight is everything in exploring. You don't wan to get stuck somewhere because of lack of jump range. Post your load out.

how do I takea screen shot of my load out in game?
I'm basically running all a level equipment, some weapons, bvest scanners that were available at lucas..

Cool area to visit is Bernard's loop. Head to the Witch head nebula and go from there. Lot's to see, Horsehead, Orion, Flame, Running man.
Or visit NGC 7822 Nebula to check out a bunch of black holes. While the Veil Nebula West looks great up close.
.
Quick check list:
- Take the biggest fuel scoop you can. Less time scanning, less chance for interdictions, less chance for scooping accidents.
- Check the map when you run low on fuel, a dotted line in your planned route means you won't have enough fuel to get that far. Star classes A to O, except L are scoop-able. Use the map view to check, I've got the scoop-able star types selected here:
StarMap.jpg
The map view displays the type of the main star, the point where you jump in. There can be many stars in a system, you can check that in the info panel.
- Your best chance of survival is to get out of npc range asap, don't bother scanning nearby civilized space. Plot a route and follow it, only stop to scoop. It's a lot more relaxing to explore without interdictions, plus every little bit of damage adds up. Hull and power plant can't be repaired. So you might as well trim down your ship and focus on jump range. http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=60g,,2-3I6u7_6u6u8S8I,52CmpV7Q42jw2UI With that setup you can still boost and have a bit of a shield buffer to escape interdictions, while getting 34ly on a full tank. Less jumps, less chance of damage while getting in and out of civilized space. (Warning: 3D shields were enough before 1.2 for submit and boost escape tactics, it may be different now)
- Check Nutter's thread for how best to go about exploring systems.
.
Changes with 1.2:
- Fuel scoop safe heat range is now below 100% (instead of 150%)
- No more overheating from black holes. (for now anyway, today I travelled right into the middle of one)
- Your route won't go missing anymore when dropping out of supercruise plus you can bind a key to select your next route point, very useful.
- There is a current bug where the first time you open the system map it will show a previous system. Quickly opening and closing the galaxy map before opening the system map seems to get around this.

There is a thread now about this...indicating immediate, unavoidable drop from SC, taking damage. So while not over heating...still taking damage.

Weapons? You hoping to meet hostile aliens:) It's pretty empty out there...

No need for screenshots, just play with edshipyard - for an all-out crazy explorer setup I'd go with something like this:

Reduce fuel scoop if you haven't the cash, that just saves time (and heat damage).

Add shields if you think you need 'em, but they won't do much against a black hole!

Bring a BIG fuel scoop. Biggest you can afford, better yet, biggest the boat can take!

I brought a 3A on an Asp to Sagittarius A*. NOT a good idea, makes fluid (forget fast) travel impossible.

While I haven't had that happen yet, that raises another important precaution while exploring:
- Always enter a new system with throttle zero. Either use a throttle slider/dial (hotas), a self centering stick (gamepad), or go into debug view before the countdown. Those methods have all been 100% safe. Before that I used a dedicated button to zero throttle during the jump, yet that failed 1% of the time for unknown reasons.
- Best to start the jump from minimum speed (seems to prevent the current black hole issue). Slow down before the fsd is all charged up and briefly max throttle to start the countdown.
