Im in love with the smalls ships ( again )....

How many players simply charge straight up the ship ladder to the big 3 or 4 without even taking their time to get to know the smaller ships.
Love the smaller ships as well - now when I don't have to worry about resources and stuff - but IMO the game mechanics promote the approach of getting a big ship instead of taking time playing with everything in between. Big ships are simply superior in many tasks like trading, mining, CG hauling and in many cases PvE combat farming.

That's true...which is why many have asked FD to create missions and content specifically for the smaller ships.

I think small ships are ideally suited to the new ground combat coming in Odyssey. Having a nimble small ship loaded with dumbfire missiles, frags &/or PA would probably be a good strategy for the close air support role with some more chunky ships for the heavy hitting duties.

Nah, small ships are dogfighters. They have no busness doing ground attack runs. Especially with the aimbot laser turrets already in the game.

Give me a reason to fly small ships and I'll happily put as much time and effort into them as any other ship.

Back when Palin's "Thargoid junk" missions were a big deal, I put a lot of effort into finding the perfect ship for it, which, ultimately, led to me building my Viper III "Blackbird", which can whizz across the surface at 900m/s (thus giving any waiting gankers a surprise) and then scoop stuff straight off the surface and then jump back into SC within a couple of seconds.

The DBX was the ideal ship to use for exploring Thargoid crash sites, and Guardian sites, because (due to it's small size) it was easy to land close to the site on rough ground.

I've built a pair of Cobra III's (The "Selina Kyle" and the "Felicia Hardy") especially for pilfering from megaships.
They're good for that as a result of having a decent sized slots for a shield and enough small slots for things like Recon Limpets and Hatchbreakers.
You could do those missions in a medium ship but a small ship is a smaller target and you can easily get in amongst the megaship's superstructure to avoid fire.

Most recently, I've started doing planetary scan missions for G5 mat's in a ship, which led to me building a DBS "Coyote" specially for the job.
The DBS works well for this because it's small (and, more importantly, narrow) so it can squeeze into tight corners and scan things where you're supposed to go in an SRV.
Also, It's hardpoint placement provides terrific convergence for launching dumbfire missiles at ground targets such as anti-aircraft batteries.
Also, also, it runs really cold so it's often possible to pop a Heat Sink and then complete the missions unnoticed.

Imagine what we could do if FDev actually put some thought into creating stuff to do in small ships?

And, yes.
The Dolphin also has the slots to make it ideal for a lot of things.
I just can't bring myself to fly the space-bus.
Wait, I love the DBS but are you saying you scan terminals with it and that you dont get harassed if you run cold or go silent while you scan?

Everyone has their own preference. Me, I am happiest in medium ships. The big ones have their place in getting large ship jobs done, like hauling cargo, mining, providing a mobile service station and more. But mediums are fun to fly, while still having enough internals and firepower to get things done efficiently. Small ships only have niche purposes in my fleet, they're too limitied for my taste.

bombing base planets missions with the Eagle.
Where do I get these missions?!

Reading the thread title I expected to see that you had bought yourself a Vulture. Now, go fix that! 🤶

Jokes aside, I think we all get trapped in the longing for bigger and "better", only to learn that the small ships are where the fun is. Not always practical, but who needs that? If you like combat, and don't want a NPC co pilot, try and fit a fighter to something like a Keelback, and then go to a CNB or Haz Res and find some Eagles etc. The fighter is really fun to fly, and the Eagles etc. don't seem to bother shooting at the mothership.
My progression went something like: Sidewinder --> Viper Mk 3 --> Vulture --> Krait Mk2 --> Vulture....yea, I own fully engineered Corvettes, but they were only as a trophy ship. Anything done in anger means I jump back into the Vulture.
Blowing up a big ship, in a small ship, is the more fun imo.

I went all the way up.. To Python. Not going to even try anything bigger... I use Cobra every day, I have Phantom for exploration and currently working on Python for PvE combat. I really don't have any interest in anything bigger. I have all the ranks and money, I just do not see any application for bigger ships in my fleet...

...Im a triple Elite player, all ships, all engineers, billions in credits and so on.

Soon or later you will be bored flying only the big/medium ships.

Now Im flying just the small ones. Exploring with a Hauler...Hunting pirates in high extraction with the Adder, doing scanning missions in planets with the sidewinder, bombing base planets missions with the Eagle.

So much fun !!! Hope some day we will get only small ships missions !
One of the best things of Elite is that no ship ever gets useless...
Congratz to you!

Small ships are interesting as endgame content because engineering allows for fancy builds.

I have several iCourrier, which is an amazing ship to mod. One for exploration/racing, one pure racer and one combat courrier.
The viper and eagles are quite cool too. I also use a moded iEagle to G3 as a ship to play with starting players. It's buckets of fun.

I wish there was more dedicated hi-end modules for small ships, like that enhanced performance thrusters, but for
other elements of the ship.

In the middle of all the praise of small ships, and I agree, it would be wrong to assume that the biggies aren't worth trying. The Python and the Phantom are both excellent, but so is the Corvette, the Cutter and in some cases the T-10.

The Conda is perhaps the best all round ship in the Galaxy. It's just less desirable than the Corvette/Cutter because "everyone" can buy one. Apart from landing on small outposts, the Conda can literally do anything, so for multi purpose I'd say it beats both the Python and the Cobra. It's just that every ship becomes boring in the long run, and that's when it becomes a good idea to spice up the challenge, by flying a shieldless superlight Eagle into a Haz Res etc.

Engineering the Conda to a decent level is "easy". Just add stuff, and the higher the grade the better. On an Eagle, you have to balance performance/mass much more. Like looking at E class shield boosters, and lightweight frag cannons, to maintain the speed and agility you gain from the dirty drag EPTs. All that is a challenge, and I don't think I had the slightest chance figuring that out, back when a small ship was all I could afford. In that way small ships are more "end game".
