I'm missing something. How do you scan nav beacons?

Thought I read/hear/saw that you didn't need a discovery scanner for systems in the bubble and that you could just scan the nav beacon to get system data. I've tried this several times with no luck, both from SC and regular space. I can stare at the beacon for many minutes but still not get a map of the system. What am I doing wrong?

Highlight the beacon itself in your contacts list (left panel) the same as you would for cargo that isn't directly in front of you

When you drop down on the nav point a white diamond icon should appear, you need to face that and have it selected. If you're already doing that and nothing's happening then something's borked.

Yep, there is the beacon... destination point, and the beacon object, once you drop out of supercruise you still have selected the beacon destination point, you have to select the beacon object from your contact list, and put your ship in a distance short enough to scan it (ship does it automatically).

This foxed me for a while on missions that suggested scanning the nav beacon for guidance.

Frontier should really fix this. An empty point in space labelled 'nav beacon' is needlessly baffling. The hud image shows a beacon when you select it too. Really misleading.
