I'm not dealing with Steam anymore.

After waiting almost three hours for ED client to update, everything appeared fine and I played for a few hours with no problems.
I opened the Steam client to check my wishlist and it insisted on updating ED itself, but then it just hung there.
It won't allow an option to NOT update. My game was fine until Steam insisted on updating it after it was already updated.

Now ED won't even start. Not Frontier's fault.
Am I stuck now having to buy it direct now in order to play the game I already paid for?

Though not official, there's a rule similar to "Don't Fly Without Re-Buy". One should never ever (if possible) play on a Patch nor Update day! LOL

Delete / uninstall the game in Steam (so it doesn't try to update again). Open your Frontier store account - go to "My Downloadable Products" - download the installer - install the game direct - never have to go through steam ever again.

I have several accounts, including one bought in a Steam Sale - I don't have it installed in my Steam Library - I just run a copy of the game launcher for each account.

My "Steam-bought" account:

I've never been a fan of steam for gaming and tend to avoid it if at all possible.
Luckily with Elite you don't need to.

I've received 3 updates to ED through Oculus over the past week.
The first couple were very small, the last was the 'big update' due this week.

I cannot play through Oculus until all updates are in place.

OMG THANK YOU...
I have been through a string of obstacles with ED since I bought it. A HOTAS that had bad internal electronics made things even more frustrating.
Steam has only made it worse.

I can play again...
I could just hug you.

im not sure why anyone is having issues with steam, ive been using it since day 1 of steam and every single one of the hundred plus games works perfectly everytime, updates are always installed without hitch, its just a perfect system, reliable, dependeable and secure. perhaps its not steam that is the problem and maybe the way your system is setup..

I've always used Steam (for the last 3 years of ED) with no problem. But now I have problems. The game will not launch properly from the taskbar menu, it gives a weird error about still needing an update. It only runs if I run from the Library list, and I have to choose Horizons there or it doesn't work. When I do that it goes into the Launcher, but with no selection for base game vs Horizons, or training, or Arena. But it will play correctly from there. If I launch the ED Launcher directly (outside Steam) it seems to run but once I start the game I get video driver errors.

So yea, something is wrong with the Steam install right now.

For the video errors try setting options - graphics - quality - FX Quality to Off. It appears to be a known issue.
For the rest, Para Handy's workaround got me back in without the Steam issues.

Same situation here; and the steam Launch from menu problem existeed before the last ED Update.. Slower FPS rates 40-45 fps can be improved to 60 FPS by turning FX in Options/Graphics to OFF.

Not that im playing so not sure if there are problems, but my game auto updated via steam, took about five minutes to do a 5 gig update.

I used to have it instaled out of steam its only in steam due to the fact it does auto update. Been using steam 11 years never had any trouble, could be worse at least its n on epic.
