Newcomer / Intro I'm Not So Dangerous

Hello all,

I'm an old time Amiga 500 Frontier player, not so much elite (a bit of oolite).

In Frontier I did the cheat to get bucket loads of credits and bought the most expensive ship in the game, well unknown to me at the time was, a big ship needs a full crew to take off and this particular ship needed 11 or so crew to get permission to leave. So now I had to spend hours and hours hiring any random person. Of course you know what's coming next but I didn't, some crew didn't get on with the other crew and they left, then others left because they wanted to see the stars and I took too long in the starport so, 1 step forwards, 2 steps back...

I don't remember if I ever did continue with that save game haha. Well, I was a young teenager with zero patience.

Anyway, I very recently bought ED and I'm really loving it at the moment. I did the training missions just fine, though the advanced combat took 2 tries. I don't know what all the fuss is over docking, these kids ought to try docking in Elite!

Now I'm doing some delivery missions and on my way to my first million!

Would love to add some people to talk to as I 99% play in open.

Funny thing happened earlier today, I was docked at a platform and looking at the boards but suddenly I could hear loud engine noises, so I quit out of the boards and looked up and there was a ship ramming into me constantly from above, after a few tries the platform shot and blew them up. I've no idea if it was a bug or a player being silly but it was both scary and funny at the same time. Luckily I took no damage.

Anyway look forward to chatting to some like minded commanders, especially if you're into Amiga's and 64s.

My name is Monkspeed.

Hey Monkspeed. I'm sorry to say that I was an Atari ST boy (far superior of course) so I very rarely played on an Amiga. Always thought it was quite small and a bit rubbish without the midi ports ;)

Welcome to the Frontier Forums, where there's always something interesting to be discovered and something disgusting to be interred. :D

Finally! Another member of the Atari ST Master Race. I also played Elite and Frontier on the the ST (Although I started with Elite on the ZX Spectrum). I didn't cheat at Frontier but I do remember being so hopeless that I had to automate everything. My ship in the end was some huge thing loaded with shield generators and automated turrets as my combat was so poor.

Welcome.. there are loads of us oul timers on here. What platform are you using? PC?
Hi Ulaidian, yes I'm on PC and using TrackIR and an ancient Logitech Wingman "Pro". I'm currently researching which HOTAS to buy. How about you?

Thanks for the welcome, good to see the rivalry still going strong after all these years =D I've got to admit that Atari Falcon was a hell of a beast!

Maybe you had the same ship as me, I've just looked on the Elite 2 wiki and I think the ship I bought was a panther clipper, big ugly square thing. I've no idea why I just never sold it and bought something smaller, 90s teenager stubborn logic I suppose =D

Maybe we can make a group for us oldie Retro computer nerds? Or maybe there already is one and someone can point me in the right direction?

Welcome to ED. Hmm, I don't remember in Frontier hired crew leaving unless they weren't paid or you fired them. But maybe it was different on the Amiga or oolite version? PC only version here.

The player ramming into you was probably a sneaking griefer trying to get you wanted and blown up by the station. You may see some of their shenanigans occasionally along with interdiction ganking squads, or ambushing base stalkers, although it's maybe tempered down now with the 3.0 C&P revision.

If you beat the advanced combat scenario on the 2nd try, you are quite dangerous.

Indeed, that's exceptional for a newcomer. I couldn't finish the adv combat scenario on a first try until two years later in the game. I'm mouse&keyboard player only. Have fun, (OP), and hope the pessimistic salt from the forums about ED dev doesn't affect you too soon (or never). ED just had a nice 3.0.x update and the game has never looked better. Good time to join the ED galaxy. o7

I'm sure it was more through luck than judgement, but I was constantly cycling the system powers. I was disheartened because I died first time!

Thanks for the welcome.

Not only were the crew fussy who else was in the crew, but some also left because I went against my word and didn't explore enough, because I was stuck in the damn port too long trying to find all the crew I needed haha catch 22. Mr Braben thought of everything!

it was the poor steam ratings that kept me away from buying the game for so long, but I'm really glad I did, it's been great so far. I don't really agree with a few concepts such as the poweplay and interdiction but it doesn't really detract from the core gameplay.

=)
