Hi,
I've recently returned to playing ED on the Vive, the last time I played was back in November last year and I got annoyed with constantly adjusting settings to prevent poor performance. So I gave up playing the game.
I have to admit that playing ED again has been good fun and enjoyable. Whatever changes have been made to the Vive/Steam VR software seem to have made life easier and the game, for me, is far more playable in VR. My rig is an i7 6700k OC'd to 4.4Ghz, Asus Strix GTX1070 GPU (latest Nvidia driver), Asus Sabertooth Z170 mk1 mobo, 32Gb of decent RAM (can't remember the make), Samsung Evo 840 SSD 500Gb games drive with the same SSD type for the OS, but 120Gb. Operating system is Windows 10. Controllers I use is the TM Hotas Warthog kit with TM flight/rudder pedals.
In game settings are just about everything on High and Ultra (where applicable) with AA and SS on the lowest setting. Steam settings are Async Reprojection enabled and SS at 2.0
At this moment in time, the game plays very well for me. Much better than when I first got the Vive and built the current PC back in July 2016. Back then the game was awful, particularly when approaching space stations. Now it seems to perform very well. Yes I get the odd 'skip' or 'stutter' but that's something I can tolerate if it's just a 'now and again' issue.
What I'm trying to say is that I can now concentrate on playing the game rather than getting frustrated with poor performance. I'm now karting passengers around the galaxy and have nearly 20 million in credits. Rather than playing for 20 mins or so, I'm now spending hours playing the game. Even the warp jumps (frame shift, is that right?) is much more smoother but still slightly stutters at the very start.
In my own opinion, I'm impressed and I'm glad I shelled out the cash for the Vive and a decent PC.
Cheers!!!
