I'm on an epic quest, do I start from a fixed point when I start Odyssey?

CMDR Kurald Galain here. So I'm fairly new to the game, a little over 110 hours so far and after going through the grind to get my pre-engineered FSD and guardian booster I've set off on my first really big exploration trip. Planning to go balls deep in deep space so to speak. Now the question I have is this: if I'm on the other side of the galaxy and starting up Odyssey, where will I start? Will I start at a station somewhere or will the new expansion textures cover my sweet-ass unexplored systems like a velvet blanket of awesomeness?

Yeah, nothing will change - you'll be at your current position.

The only thing you'll likely want to get first (available at any orbital Station) are the different suits and personal Weapons.
The Exploration Suit has far more Oxygen supply than the Flight Suit - and it carries (exclusively) the Sampling Tool to sample Biologicals while on foot.
All that Equipment can only be purchased when disembarking on foot while docked at a Station, it's also required to create "personal Suit loadouts" which you can choose from and put on only while on a Ship (your own Ship or an Apex Taxi ride).

So if anything, make sure you're near a Station before Odyssey goes live in order to get these things purchased and sorted once it is live.

As a really quick-guide :
  • park Ship near or at a Station before Odyssey release
  • log into Odyssey once it is live
  • disembark at the Station and on-foot visit the Store inside
  • purchase Suits, Personal Weapons and Consumables (i.e. buy MedKits and especially plenty of Energy Cells - they replenish Suit Energy which also governs your O2 supply, so see them like extra Oxygen tanks)
  • access one of the Terminals inside the Station and create desired loadouts
  • board Ship again and you're ready to go, redressing into another loadout possible inside the Ship at anytime (done from the lower/crouch Panel)
  • change to Ship Equipment : The Advanced Docking Computer can now Auto-Land on Planet Surfaces, very useful... if you have a free slot, it's worth considering to equip
  • enjoy

Will new equipment be available to those way out in deep space? Available through fleet carriers? Or must travel back to civilization?

Alternatively, ignore all that until you've finished your trip. There is no compulsion to bother with any of the new fangled gubbins until you're ready.

I'm on an expedition I reckon will take me until at least September and I have zero intention of deviating just because FDev happened to release some new things in the middle of it. Entirely up to you whether you hang around near where stations are until Odyssey comes out or rush back when it does.

I'll be back to the bubble quicker than I was when Horizons came out...

The good news is that basic disembarking will still be possible with the flight suit you already have. You just won't have the Artemis suit with the juicer (genetic sampler tool), or any of the new guns or other suits. But yeah, depending on where you are, Colonia or Explorers Anchorage might be the nearest locations. If you're anywhere near the bubble, or the Colonia-road, there are lots of stations outside of the bubble in those areas. Several of the nebulae in the bubble's general area have asteroid bases.

Does a base from pre-Odyssey need to offer Outfitting (or some other indicator) to offer the new services in Odyssey?

Worded differently: Will all bases offer all of the new services? (the wiki suggests "yes", but does not specifically say "yes").

From Wiki
Starports, orbital Outposts, Asteroid Bases, and Planetary Ports are home to new Concourses, public common areas where players can meet with each other, take on missions, purchase equipment and ships, exchange or sell certain commodities, and redeem discoveries. All Concourses provide access to seven different vendors, each offering a unique service.

As far as we know, yes, all of the orbital stations, and the ground bases (not the new settlements) will have an interior concourse, and those all have the equipment shop. As far as we know.

Now it may vary as to which stations have which gear available. We don't know how that works out yet. But I'm under the impression that grade-1 gear is probably sold everywhere, and only the higher-grade and pre-modified gear will be more sparse.

Since Neutron-hopping in a long-range Ship should put the nearest Station into a somewhat realistic distance/time, I take it most Explorers even on an Expedition could settle with a short de-tour if desired.
(I did the same essentially when grabbing me some discounted Class 5 FSD v1 from Colonia while being out in Deep Space myself... was all done in less than 48hrs)

I personally wouldn't want to stand around in a low Oxygen Flight Suit next to some undiscovered new Biologicals, only to realize I can't do much with them because I'm lacking the Artemis Exploration Suit and the Sampling Tool.
But that's all down to personal preference I think, depending on how people view the new Exobiologist Rank.

I'm drawing a shape on the map, any detouring would ruin it :D

If we can get the new stuff from Fleet Carriers and I spot one that's only a few hundred ly off the line then I might divert.

Just to add you can also choose loadouts in your SRV.

Also you can still scan bio using the scanner in your SRV or ship and get the Codex data, you just won't get the samples that you can sell later.

ok exploraton sounds like it got harder for me but more money ?

not a bad one i hope

Of course not. 4 across the bottom and top circumnavigations inspired by beryllium.

Just turn off whatever EDSM/Inara sync tool you use while making the detour, and delete the logs from that period before turning them back on. It'll be as though it never happened!

My guess is that we'll get one of each suit at Odyssey launch automatically, and credits deducted from our accounts, so that situations like explorers missing on the Artemis suit are avoided.

I hope so. Being around BP I would not want to go back to SagA just to buy a suit.
