I'm on the outside looking in

Man, I don't know what it is, but I've been really wanting to hop into Open. I normally play in the Mobius group and am always excited to see a hollow box. I often hail them just to say hey (though most never reply). I have a couple of reservations, however. First, though my bankroll and ratings are paltry, I've gained them completely outside of open. For some reason, it just doesn't sit well with me to bring over those assets to open play. I have certainly put in the hours (due to my overall ineptitude), but I ran missions evading NPCs, hunted bounties in RES with empty cargo hold, even ranked up to 3 (wooo) in PP and got the first rank Federal ship all without the presence of potentially hostile ships.

I don't even want hostile player interactions. Those aren't really fun for me. But if I'm sitting in my (one) ship which is fitted for combat, enough cargo for one round of PP canisters (sounds worse than it is), and is granted by a naval superpower, it seems like it might invite hostility. Someone even decided to allow me "expert" combat ranking. Oh, the hilarity. I mean, a bored player could absolutely justify offing me. I probably wouldn't even be mad (maybe a little sad, my poor account balance). Currently, I see my options as being stay in Mobius, join Open with my current save, or join Open with a clean save.

Are those really it? I'd start a new save in a heartbeat if I thought it would even be worth it to do so, or if I didn't have to clear my current save. I don't mind actually playing the game; ranking up from 1 - 3 is really doing the same stuff as ranking up from 3-5, after all. I just don't want to spin my wheels (in space, space wheels). I don't want to bring my current save over to Open, but I don't want to blow up all my hard work just to decide "yep, Open blows" and return to Mobius at square one.

Take a note of your balance, buy a sidey and go to a system you have no rep in. Worth a try, but you will get expert level and above ai as well so...

Good luck!

Come into open, it's not that dangerous. Just don't fly wihout rebuy and don't get worked up when you get blown up, it's only a rebuy, money is easy to make in this game, dieing starts happening less and it lets you get more creative with your ship designs. My trade blockade runners or silent running combat ships would have no place in PvE.

YOLO.

Played in Open since PB2. Have been interdicted 3x during that time. 1 PVP death in which I was a willing participant. There are gankers to be found, especially around CGs, but most of Open is very quiet, indeed.

Join a Multicrew and make some friends is a good start. Always valuable to have friends in hostile enviroment.
Be brave - we count on you :)

I play exclusively in Open because I prefer the unpredictability and "immersion" inherent in interacting with other CMDRs. NPCs are very predictable and you'll probably eventually notice that their behaviors are quite limited. In part this is due to the P2P architecture but it also has to do with rather clumsy "approximations" of proper CMDR behavior and they don't really follow the same rules as players do. The downside to playing in Open is that there will be a certain number of CMDRs who amuse themselves by trolling or griefing other players. I've lost several rebuys from trolling/griefing in Open but I've also had some great interactions with other CMDRs which more than makes up for it. Learning to deal with other CMDRs has also made me a much better player as well and in some ways I actually enjoy the challenge of being one step ahead of whoever is out there trying to troll other CMDRs. Despite the reputation that Open has for frequent trolling it really isn't as common as some players claim. The only place that you are likely to encounter trolling is active CGs since they have high player traffic and tend to be something of a magnet for CMDRs interested in trolling or PVP in general. Aside from the occasional encounter at Engineering bases or other high-traffic areas you probably won't run into many issues outside of CGs.

In terms of any assets you've accumulated in Solo, I really wouldn't worry about that at all in terms of any impact it would have on the gameplay. If you've avoided using Robigo, Sothis, stacking massacre missions and mode switching then you really haven't derived much benefit from accumulating credits or rank in Solo mode. You might have avoided a few rebuys from other CMDRs from playing in Solo but that has much less of an impact on your progression compared to whether or not you were using the most efficient methods to earn credits or rank during that time.

I would recommend trying Open for a bit, in a relatively inexpensive ship (so that rebuys aren't an issue) and seeing how you like it. If you have a good experience, then gradually try participating in CGs (again in a relatively inexpensive ship to start with) and eventually you will probably find that you enjoy the gameplay experience in Open much more than you did in Solo.

Only play in open, been murdered three times in 2 years

Just do it
Never participated a CG? :D

Joking aside...
To OP: open can be a lot of fun when you meet they right kind of players.
Just stay clear of hot zones (like CG's and popular places) if you don't want to risk your ship and cargo.
Or park your best ship somewhere safe and go in small in these busy areas.

As of ditching your current commander.. hmm.. starting fresh can already be a lot of fun, even in solo, but that's completely up to you if you'd want to clear all your previous effort.
You could also do a 'soft reset' as some call it. Just bank all your credits in ships/equipment except for the cost of a sidey. Park your current ship(s) somewhere and start fresh without killing your current assets.
Buying a second account is also an option if money isn't the issue.

It's been a while since I've seen a line of coke in a music video.

Behold! Nerd Williams has been reborn into the Open world! There was a Freagle waiting for me. I forgot about that little guy.

Welcome to a slightly-differently-populated-but-basically-the-same game mode! Other than the thrill of blockade-running at a popular CG, the game is essentially the same in every mode unless you have some type of ideological need to stay with a certain one.

I always thought the advantage of Mobius was that people were more friendly and interactive, lol. Anyway, the terrors of open are overrated. Always fly with rebuy and stay on your toes and it's fine most of the time. The only time I use solo is if I'm trying to accomplish something specific and don't want to be interrupted. Also, don't reset your save, just play open and don't worry about rebuys for a while while you get used to it.
