I'm only getting 12fps with 0.8 and DK2?

I have DK2 and runtime 0.8 installed. I have a BenQ monitor that is capable of 144Hz. I set a custom Res on this monitor of 1920 x 1080 at 75Hz, like people are doing to get DK2 to work with 0.8. When I went to the settings in Elite Dangerous after installing steam Vr and also changed these setting to the same as my monitor. When I play Elite dangerous in the Rift though, I get terrible judder and seem to get 12fps no-matter what setting I choose high or low. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I have a very good computer and people with ones that arn't as good are getting butter smooth gameplay. My specs are below, but I think it's a setting or something I have missed.

i7 6700k
Geforce 970
2x8 GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4
Samsung SSD pro

Are you playing vanilla E:D, or ED:H? If it's ED:H, then maybe it's the GTX970.

The minimum GPU for ED:H in VR is a GTX980 with 4Gb, as shown here

Although the 970 is not much below the 980, there is an issue with the 970 where any memory above 3.5GB is accessed at a lower speed, which may be causing the slowdown. As a test, try lowering graphics setting to see if it disappears.

If anyone else is using a GTX970, they may be able to confirm or deny?

Aside from that, using the 0.8 runtime could be causing it.

In Direct mode it doesn't matter what your monitor is doing.

I can run 800 runtime on my GTX 680. I'm overclocked on cpu and gpu and also reduce graphic settings until the game is smooth.

Actually there's something I noticed recently...

I had been playing Horizons via my original steam ED purchase but accessed outside of steam by navigating to the download folder and sending the ED launcher icon to desktop.

When I purchased Horizons I wanted to get it onto steam so I linked the frontier account and added the game to my steam library.

I then proceeded to download and run Horizons via steam and to my horror the judder was absolutely awful! I even tried rebooting... Same.

It's bizarre. My Elite D is via steam but I launch outside of steam via the icon as described above. That gives me very good performance with 800 runtime.

Someone suggested it might be the steam overlay causing this phenomenon.

I'm really not sure what was / is wrong with asking this question in one of the countless '0.8 / SteamVR' threads which now litter this forum like a plague.

@eL_tell - I'm trying it with Elite Dangerous not Horizons.

@grammatonfeather - I tried that, but it doesn't work

@CylonSurfer - The funny thing is when I Googled this looking for a fix there wasn't one. All I did find when I Googled it was posts where you have told people not to make another thread. You have given no help in fixing the problem though. I could say doing this litters up the Google search engine because nobody finds a fix and just sees your reply about making to many threads.

I'm all ears if you know of any fixes for this and would appreciate it. You could even direct me to a thread that has the same problem as I'm having because I can't find one.

Yes, everything else runs butter smooth. I've just disabled the Steam overlay and it made no difference.

tried using steam elite with 0.8 and win 10 with steam vr a few times but kept going back to 0.5 with the original elite launcher due to the severe judder. already tried all the fixes listed , but none worked for me.

Jumping back into the game after 6 months off, tried all the things people were saying to try but .8 runtime is always a bit slower for me. Slow enough that I went back to .5.

SteamVR overlay is indeed causing refresh rate issues. However I found out the following.

1 - You do not have to set a custom 75Hz resolution for your primary monitor.
2 - The "bug" with SteamVR only appears when your main monitor is in a 16/9 scale ration (e.g 1080p, 1650x900, 1280.720 etc).

Simply set your monitor to any of the 16/10 scale ratio (for ex 1680*1050) and the tied refresh rate between the monitor refresh rate and the DK2 goes away.

Those quoted specs are for the cv1 and/or vive. The dk2 uses a lower resolution and refresh hence lower requirements. A 970 should be more than adequate, unfortunately I sold mine before horizons launched so never managed to test it. But I think the OPs issue has more to do with steam overlay messing with refresh rates.

Did you already try it with the SDK0.5?

@Mazhurg - This just fixed it for me, so big thanks. Does anyone know what the Steam overlay actually does? Thanks!

Your welcome cyclone surfer. Read this reply above very carefully before you spew off again. You offer no assistance but think very highly of yourself obviously. Please get lost.

The point is, there are numerous threads on this exact subject, maybe none with the exact answer that you seek, but threads on the topic all the same, threads which it would have been more appropriate for you to ask your questions in.

Doing so instead of creating yet another thread RE: 'SDK 0.8 + Steam VR', would mean all of the information, including the potential answer to your question (or anyone's) would be in ONE THREAD....NOT spread across many threads all on the same subject, making it harder for people to find the information they seek..... So yes, this thread is litter and counter productive to all but your-lazy-self.

@CylonSurfer - I'm sure if everyone posted their problems in one thread, then things would become very confusing. People have different problems and have you ever heard of the saying "It's like looking for a needle in a haystack?" I've found my fix because people have recognized my problem through seeing my post and helped. I don't think these people would have seen this post if they'd have had to trawl through pages of a single thread.

I really don't think you're going to get a problem fixed by placing everyones problems into one thread. Seriously, I don't think anyones going to read what would eventually become a book just to find a fix. Not unless the books got some type of index page anyhow, like on what page to find such and such problem. That's what most books have.. DIY books, Computer Books, Telephone Books ..ect.

I'm not lazy, I just don't need a Master Class on everyone else's problems, if it's not the same one I'm experiencing.

The 'UA' thread seems to be doing just fine and is a gleaming example of how forums work. Information pertaining to one topic / subject being posted exclusively in one thread. Such a thread can then be searched easily for keywords or phrases should one not wish to manually read every post. Kind of why it's known as a thread..... I guess you have heard of that saying.

To use your analogy, SDK 0.8+SteamVR information should be in one thread, 'rather than a whole sub forum becoming a haystack full of 'SDK 0.8 + SteamVR' straw' that obscure new threads on different topics. It's laziness on your part, nothing more. Your question could have been posted in one of the many threads that exist already. Reading 10 pages of text in one thread is much easier than reading pages and pages spread across multiple threads.

Childish dribble? Are you serious? I've no idea what a "Durfer" is either. I think you'll find it's called a slip of the key given the "S" is at the side of the "D" on my keyboard. I've corrected it though just to make you happy.

Thanks to those who helped, I appreciate the fix. Time to close this thread if any admins see this.

Out of fairness I overlooked it in your original reply after all, once is a mistake - I'm not so sure that twice is....

I'll forgive you this time CMDR ;)
