Like I said earlier, this is or isn't a good idea, depending on the ship you fly. If you fly a bigger, slower ship and trying to shake off a smaller figher, then yes. Or if the forces are somewhat in balance and there is a dogfighting stalemate.
But in smaller fighter with weaker shields, flying in a straight line for more than a couple of seconds is generally unadvisable.
It's less of an issue on lower ranks, although I still recommend at least employ a bit of a side or vertical thrust, othewise you're asiking for a plasma ball in your face.
