I started playing in beta, and I've yet to work up the courage to take half the missions or enter a conflict zone.
I've gotten pretty good at landing though

Same here really...Mastered the landing and docking....Done a few minor transport missions and dealt with a few interdictions......If to many ships interdict you there is always " Run Away "
Press "U" to put your weapons back....Press " J " and take evasive action till the frame shift drive kicks in

If nothing else it cheeses them off and its great fun

I was just like this too when I first installed the game! Pressing launch that first time was a scary experience. Now, I'm all 'full bottom thruster, full boost' off external docking platforms! Haven't quite become THAT proficient at that style of leaving an internal docking bay !

Dont try and adjust while you are trying to enter the station with your finger on the trigger, the station gets upset.

as for the sidey I entered my first station in a wild spin, plenty of room.

Trying to use hyperspace, kept informing me I was mass locked, 10Km from the station I realised I still had my landing gead down, its these Doh moments that teach you the basics.
