When 1.1 came in, I complained that my A class viper couldn't use shield cells any more. But after a few days I've found it has made the game more fun.
I had been repetitively doing the 150-190k assassination missions as they paid better than pirates. Didn't want to go trading because it's boring, but even the assassinations were getting a grindy.
Then the shield cell nerf plus better AI suddenly made assassinations much more risk. I lost my ship twice, and a few 100k of bounties. One cobra dropped my shields while I was k-warrant scanning, then nipped around to disable my thrusters. I hadn't seen that before, and it's made me a lot more wary of NPCs.
So I decided to pursue my medium term goal of getting an Alioth permit by trade missions. The random goods they wanted had me jumping all over a small section of space, and the increased interdictions kept things interesting. Even with an armed to the teeth viper I still boosted and ran from a few encounters due to short mission time frames.
I've still completed a few assassinations, but they've been more edge of seat experiences.
Overall, the game has (for me) become much more varied, and thus more fun.
