I'm stuck out in nowhere can anyone help?

I'm not sure if that would work, as I have never tried that. However, when you self destruct you have the option, assuming you have the funds to cover insurance, to buy back your old loadout. Since you do not lose any credits on modules it would only be a matter of going to outfitting in the station you are in and buying the module you need an you will get back everything you spent on the module you are replacing.
The only problem that one could have is that the station might not have the module you need. Then you would have to go to another station in the system to see if they have it. The system map shows all stations and when you pick one it will tell you what facilties they have --shipyard, outfitting, refuel, etc. Worse case you might have to jump to another system to search

I hope not. Otherwise there is a very obvious exploit to be had.

Yeah, that was the first thought that occured to me after I had posted my suggestion.

The E-grade components are dirt cheap though; I expect the money you'd make stripping the ship and then self-destructing may not be more than the cost of the E-grade components anyway? Someone should do the math.

Thanks to all that responded to my rather testy posting. My frustration doesn't stem as much from losing my first ship and starting over as it does with the fact I haven't started over. It sent me back to the starter base, and when I tried to dock at the nearby system it wouldn't let me because it was till keeping track of the the crimes I had unintentionally committed in my "previous life". This makes it difficult to make any progress if most (or all...I'll check tonight) of the nearby bases won't let you dock. That was the reason I ran out of fuel (btw...am I missing an indicator on the galaxy map of how far I can go with my current loadout?).I have never played a game where you weren't allowed to start over (let alone have multiple avatars). Am I missing something?

If you clear your save, you start fresh. No reputation, no record of crimes, nothing but starter ship.

Also, crimes don't prevent you from docking anywhere, unless you've been scanned.

You dont "die" when you lose your ship. Your pilot is always ejected. That's why your criminal past remains. You need to clear your save (on the main menu under options before you start) to start again fresh.

Of course if you WANT the possibility of death, you can always play Ironman (wipe save whenever you die) or my own personal variation of it, the Pilot Ejection Table, adding a degree of risk every time you eject :D
