I'm sure this is all coincidental, but...

This new game has appeared on Steam.

Now, I'm sure it's all a coincidence, even though in their FAQs they say "You know, we played all of it. All major titles in space sim industry.", but there are quite a few of these coincidences, including:

- "Frontier" in the title.
- A ship that looks, erm, familiar.
- Calling the release "First chapter".

Yes, there are a lot of differences too, but I'd be lawyering-up if I were FDev.

Let's see? Sure that ship looks a bit like the Chieftain, which in turns looks a lot like the Raza (http://darkmatter.wikia.com/wiki/Raza). And I believe I've seen something similar in Agents of Shield.
Call it First Chapter. Well, I've read quite a few books, all of them have a First Chapter. So nothing new there in a way to tell a story.

If you're trying to copy the Elite franchise, you don't call your game by the name of a company which virtually nobody knows. People know Elite, they don't know Frontier. Maybe the roller coaster people know Frontier for RCT3 and PC, but if you say Elite the first name that comes to mind, if any, is David Braben, not Frontier.

To be fair chum, the "Braben Pilot Simulator" would struggle to pull in purchases.

...scrap that, I'd buy it in an instant.

It looks vaguely like the Chieftain because they both share the generic sci-fi-dropship-with-orientable-engine-nacelles look.
That's like those accusations the Skyjet from Valerian was stolen from ED's Orca.
Sci-fi space ships have been done to death, it's virtually impossible to create something that isn't going to look like something else, especially if you stick to very generic designs inspired by the most common sci-fi material.

Incidentally, about the only "new" design would be something approaching realism. If we had actual space combat craft, it's generally speculated they'd be largely spherical with varied weapon turrets around the outside, the bridge tucked firmly away in the middle, and epic thruster configurations to take advantage of orbits.

If you can't wait until season 4(?) to fly your Chieftain around atmospheric planets, Frontier Pilot Simulator may be just what you need...

This is a good thing. Only competition will challenge Frontier's culture of mediocrity into delivering more than a minimally viable product.

I wouldn't call this a competition. Just another struggling low profile low sales indie, who raised a bashing interest here for some curious reason.

dunno.,.... but imo it looks promising... one i shall now watch, thanks

PS the ship design is not that unique so could easily be coincidence

I have noticed recently that there are others claiming to be Rob around here and others that claim to be at work.

Just be aware I am watching you!

They have however trademark on game which has Frontier name in it.

The only game they have with the 'Frontier' in the title that I can see is; Frontier: First Encounters

It is not a trademark title, or, the trademark has lapsed. (ref: USPTO)

Further, a title trademark does not in any way infer sole rights to any or all words used in said title. What is does protect is the title as a whole so someone else cannot use the same title or a title so close to the trademarked title that might confuse a consumer.

Further PS: A trademark only lasts 10 years.
Further PSS: Trademark and Copyright are not mutually inclusive, they are entirely different things.
