I'm Taking the Game's Starting Loaned Sidewinder to Andromeda, Or I'll Die Trying.

Yeah, I know, I'm an idiot

What is the Andromeda Run? It's taking a ship, any ship, and going 2,500,000ly in it.

The furthest star from the bubble is somewhere in the ballpark of 65,000ly. That's equivalent to running back and forth to Beagle Point about 19 times.

Why am I doing this?

First, and foremost, I was inspired by a good friend of mine who completed an Andromeda Run back in Nov. 2019. They created a wonderful set of logbooks to accompany it, and inspired me to look toward exploration a long time ago.

However, with the release of Odyssey, I really wanted to find a way to do something just... ridiculous. And whats more ridiculous than taking the Starter Loaned Sidewinder, engineering the crap out of it, and flying 2.5 million ly?

The main goal of this journey is to set up a large scale charity event once I get to the end of my run. My group, Alchemy Den, likes to do yearly charity events that usually rack up a few thousand dollars to Children's Life Hospitals and whatnot. I figured a great ending to this year will be to break the mold of our "Drive around a planet" events and do something a little more.

Gimme more Ship Details

Here you go, a build of the "Andromeda Or Bust" : https://s.orbis.zone/fbim

Engineered to (nearly) the max, it's meant to be able to withstand planetary landing bumps and repair my stuff long enough to get to where I need to be.

Also comes handy with a last minute mining laser for when i eventually run out of AMFU repairs.

How Can I Follow Along with Your Stupidity?

Good question!

Till Next Time I see you all o7

With that build, it's a whopping 64,834 jumps at best to travel 2.5M light years! Clearly not a distance to be travelled for the unprepared. o7 to you, CMDR! Let us know how it goes. :)

Hopefully I can stack as many neutrons as I can to get that number down considerably, but even with perfect neutrons, it'll be one hell of a journey :D!

Thanks o7

good luck :) whether you make it or give up!

sidey as explorer is more of a choice since odyssey ... as you can get out without a srv. not sure about material collection though.

i personally would drop either the additional fueltank or the shield for a supercruise assist on any endurance run, as the automatic dethrottle will save you more repairs than a shield for occasional landing.

i would definetly not take your powerplant. sidey has a low heatcapacity, and that build will run hot, adding damage when you engage fsd to early.

That's something you should do, yes. :) Assuming you jump max range and no neutrons every time, at 300 jumps per day (5 hours or more playtime), that's 216 days of hyperjumps.

Haven't had an issue with heat just yet. If I do a neutron ladder and have to scoop up for a while, staying below 60 kg/s scooping speed stops me from overheating.

But it's a bit too late to make ship changes anyhow. The mining laser was a very last second addition because I wanted something to break the monotony while im out there, and AMFU repair synth is a hell of a drug :D!

Thanks for the well wishes o7. I'm hoping I make it as well!

If you've replaced all or most of the modules in it, and "engineered the crap out of it," is it really still the starting loaned sidewinder?
Is the Ship of Theseus still the same ship if you keep the steering wheel of the "original?" :D

Philosophical questions aside, it is indeed the first ship I was put into as a starter CMDR all those years ago. It still has the original Loaned Hull, fuel tank, and some other thing I can't recall. Otherwise, anything that could be upgraded for range and engineered was done so.

Wait a sec, are there any star systems between Milky Way and Andromeda?
If there are, what are the average Ly between these star systems?
1,000 Lys?
Which ship(s) allow you to jump 1,000Lys, even with the help of neutron star boost?

I applaud your initiative and drive. It sounds like a fun challenge.

But...I don't think you can actually fly to another galaxy. There's just the Milky Way, with no way to bridge the gap.

Nope, there's no bridge to Andromeda available. There's a very distinct edge to the Milky Way. What I've inferred is that this is a journey to cover a similar distance (2.5 Mly), but it will have to be contained within the Milky Way.
Oh I see. Just taking a long route that's about the same length? Strange concept, but ok. It might be fun.

Yes, it is just taking the same "length" of the route, just inside the Milky Way.

Essentially pumping my "total hyperspace distance" an extra 2.5 million ly, except I'm stupidly doing it in a Sidewinder.
