I'm sure most of us have seen videos of satellites being deployed in orbit. So.....why not have this as a profession in ED?
Its not as if Satellites aren't in the game already. You could have a Satellite Hanger Bay module to carry said item, and then have missions where you have to travel to a selected USS in orbit of a planet for deployment. For satellites for civilian use (Weather and Public Service satellites), the pay wouldn't be that great and the risk would be low.
But for Spy Satellites...well, maybe certain factions would try to stop you. Because they like their privacy. Who doesn't? High Risk, High Reward.
Ditto with communication beacons. I can access GalNet anywhere in the galaxy. You'd think there would be a vast and ever expanding network of com beacons out there which allows me to do this. As with the satellites, some one must be deploying them. Why not us Commanders?
The real fun could arrive with Space Legs. You could have missions to go space-walking to repair or even sabotage these satellites and beacons. Imagine going for a walk to fix Beacon TZ-23121U, when a wing of Vultures show up:
We'll double your pay if you transmit codes to shut that beacon down. Why? None of your concern. I, and my pulse lasers, await your answer Commander.
At which point you could ask your co-pilot to remove the threat and hope she's as good as her resume says she is. Or perhaps you could ask your co-pilot to carry out repairs etc and deal with any threat yourself if there's one to be dealt with.
