We do have AI and GPS-like auto-pilot for planetary landings/take-offs.
Every time you dismiss your ship, it goes away on auto-pilot, unless you have a crew member. Further, on recall, it can come back and navigate to your current location all by itself. Of course, it may be homing on a radio signal but it still can reach a pin-point on a planet. Further, planetary coordinates are readily available in the ship nav system.
It's just one of those "BECAUSE GAME" that those capabilities are limited.
