General / Off-Topic Imagination

I watched a TV program the other day with Brian Cox where he also admitted his devotion to Sagan.

Am I the only one who thinks Sagan was boring?

OK, so he was a smart and learned man, but his TV programs were an exercise in vicarious fantasy. When clips and images of some of the amazing features found in Space, there seemed to be as many shots of him. His self devotion reminded me of L Ron Hubbard and frankly, so did his science.

Show a child why he's made a mistake instead of telling him he's a useless idiot and he too will become another Einstein.

Hire teachers with some intelligence instead of egotistical bullies who get their kicks from watching children fight each other and you will produce a classroom of leaders to take the world forward.

Tell little girls and little boys that it's OK to be little girls and little boys and you will create a generation of happy parents.

I don't hold the same opinion on Sagan. yes, there was fantasy in Cosmos but I saw it as trying to instill wonder in young minds, like mine.

Would you rather todays generation watch Cosmos....or some of the fine "Reality TV" shows these days. Seriously what do these shows do that could be considered good.

As for your other statements I completely agree especially with Showing a child why he has made a mistake instead of berating him for making it.

Nope, you're not the only one. (And I thought I was the only one).

I will add however that I think Sagan did inspire a generation of people in his time, which can only be a good thing.

Agreed.

Though I'm bound to point out that Gene Roddenberry inspired a lot more.

Personally, I don't criticise his science, I criticise his personal cult of self.

I criticise his emphasis upon his personal philosophies which has nothing to do with science. (He was no philosopher, whatever he liked to think).

He as a showbusiness personality, using casual references to astronomy to promote his travelling circus.
