Newcomer / Intro Imperial accent?

Somewhere it says that to a Federal, an Imperial accent sounds like very strange vowels bound into a whine. That description was lifted almost verbatim from the old Frontier manual, which I can still remember almost by heart.

So an Imperial accent = a British 1920's wireless newsreader from the BBC? Or have I got it wrong?

Jump to a few Imp systems and check for yourself. They are different, but not in the way you describe. One of the station announcers speaks with a Japanese accent, for example. The station announcer in many independent communist systems sounds like you describe. My favourite one is the Dutch guy that you only hear these days in Alliance starports. There used to be a really grumpy Scottish announcer in anarchies, but I've not heard him for ages.

I find the obsequious nature of the imps' ATC really grating, there is one particularly oleaginous guy that makes me feel like firing missiles into the slot.

There is a neat one with a Northern Lass (I think in Independent systems) - she could have my Barm cake any time she wanted by the sound of her (although she might prefer Muffin).

She's fab. I often reply "Ayup Chuck!" when I hear her voice. And before anyone asks I'm Northern too so it's allowed :D Some of the Imperial ones can cause a serious loss of concentration whilst trying to dock  Maybe I need to head outside the bubble to cool off...

I don't believe the current accents used by ATC are meant to indicate what the regional accents in the ED universe actually sound like. And I'm pretty sure that they have not referred to the old FE2 Gazetteer entry for Achenar when they hired the Imperial voices.

This Gazetteer entry mentioned by the OP reads...
...a person with a Federation accent is met with scorn unless money can be made out of them. The accent of the Empire has evolved out of Achenarians trying to mock the standard Federation diction by accentuating certain vowels. To the foreigner, their speech sounds rather like a whine.

None of the ATCs or station announcers in Imperial space sound particularly whiny to me.

The description in ED is lifted verbatim from that.
