Ships Imperial Clipper for exploration? Ridiculous or worth the drawbacks for the great view?

OK so it doesn't have the greatest Jump range...

But would it still work, if you feel exploration would be much more fun with the great view from its cockpit?

Yeah it works, it reaches about 24 Ly jump range weight-optimized with scanners etc, so not much worse than a Cobra, which is a decent explorer after all.

But I suggest you wait for 1.3, that will add extra fuel tanks so you can expand on the rather small one, I would suggest add another 16t of fuel and use an A5 fuel scoop or better. :)

Core exploration, Yes with a big fuel scoop. Watch out for that brown dwarf/unscoopable field

Rim exploration no, you need the jump range.

People have explored in less capable ships (FDL etc)

I'm out exploring in one right now.

Due to the recent sniper-at-Sag. A* thing, this particular explorer is loaded for bear, so I'm down to about 20LY jump range, which actually isn't so bad, as I'm not in a rush to get to Sag. A* any more (already been there), and I'm also programming a nice application for Exploration which I will be releasing Soon[tm], so I'm not even that far away, but still encountering lots of interesting new star systems ;)

You can get a light weight Clipper to 25-27ly jump range. The biggest problem was the tiny fuel tank.
With 1.3 you can add another class 4 tank and double it's range and only lose about 1ly.

You can even reduce the power plant to 2A on the build with the extra tank, which brings the jump range just above 25Ly again:

I'm the proud owner of a new Imperial Clipper thanks to credits earned through exploration.

I set off into the big black in my beautiful new bird last night, but didn't get far. I was aiming for the horse head nebula, and got as far as Rigel. When I tried to set the course for my onward journey it was "destination unreachable".

Now, I've got this thing maxed out with top end FSD, but also with big guns and other range-lowering accessories, so granted, I'm not correctly kitted out for exploration, but it hit home about the Clipper's limitations.

I'd still use my Cobra for long trips.

Another thing is, that I don't like the Lakon ships very much, they feel like bare metal trucks.

I understand that isn't a negative for everyone, but after flying the crappy T7 for a bit too long, I had so totally enough of that, I don't even like the ASP anymore - bought one, fitted it and then sold it again within a week...

A picture says more than a thousand words, they say.... look and see for yourself if my Clipper "Princess Melidia" makes a decent explorer:

<SNIP>

Care to spoiler that and/or post a Pic heavy warning..... (My internet nearly had a heart attack, still heavy breathing :p)

Nice pics tho, makes me want my Clipper back :D
