Imperial clipper... nearly noone seems to use it

my target in far further is the imperial clipper..

it was since they introduced the ship

but when i watch youtube videos the call seems to be the clipper is nice eye candy but s........ one saying and showing the hardpoints are so far outside that ya cant use fixed weapons and so on

in beta i played around with my cobra... using turrets in the small hardpoints and it worked amazingly well .. while bursts seem to have quicker movement and stay on target while manouvering where beams wander off once you manouver...

isnt the clipper useable with turrets? 2 size 3 lasers turrets on the narcels and 2 medium with multicannon..

while the size 2 seem to be closer together maye you can just use gimballed there

anyone tryed the clipper with combat? cant find clipper bomat videos on youtube but the one where hes trying to hit enemy with fixed weapons.. and a few seconds with gimballed ones but 0.0 turret fits

i have a clipper with 224 ton cargo and 2 x F2 muilt-cannons (L) + 2x E1 Beam lasers (M) (all Gimblled) + PD , so far haven't had a problem killing stuff at all as i fly about trading , but haven't bothered with turrets yet

I've seen a few posts here proposing that the Clipper might in fact be top dog at the moment (it's fast enough to be able to choose whether to fight AND is heavily armed.)

My limited experience (I've only had mine for a few hours) is that it's great. It's not as agile as the smaller ships, but it's seriously quick. The hardpoint placement is terrible, but you can work with it. I strongly prefer fixed weapons, but I've had to settle for just one fixed large Beam and one gimbal large pulse (a beam works ok, but I don't like to waste much heat/power on gimbals) with a couple of gimbled kinetic weapons (currently multi cannon, but I might switch to cannons or flak) in the medium slots.

I've had no problems getting the fixed weapon on target. I just wish the fixed hardpoints weren't quite as far apart (or could be 'dialed in' to some point, say 1km ahead of the cockpit, instead of aiming parallel to each other.

EDIT: and if you're into trading, it's awesome. You can have 240kt with a small sheild, and can swoop through the letterbox dock at crazy speeds/angles as if you were still flying a Cobra (the ship is supposed to be as wide as a T9, but I've happily scraped past everything short of T9 in the letterbox, at speed.)

Eh LOTS of people use the Clipper. Its a good cargo ship, a lot cheaper to run than a Python but can protect itself better than a T-7 (plus is faster). The hardpoints are bad for pvp but its fine otherwise.

...and is so nice and shiny white. I'm currently Lord of the Empire. One more rank and I'm Baron, and are finally allowed to buy the Clipper. There is just the small matter of gaining the credits needed to get it. Roughly 22.5million for the ship, about 1.5m for insurance, I'll need modules for at least 4 million to start with and on top of that 1 million to spend on cargo. That should all add up to 29 million. Current stash'o'cash sits at about 12 million. I kinda' went ahead and splurged 6 million more on my Asp today - needed A grade thrusters and some other bits and bobs.

Since I'm not selling my Asp (or Cobra), I got quite the few little credits to squeeze out of stingy stations. I might just surrender, get a Type 7 and do some grinding before getting the Clipper.

Yes absolutely.
And it is well suited for affable, decadent, dandy, lisping Empire Slave master Barons and their harems. ;)

Cheers Cmdr's

Flattery from a peasant? How droll.

What makes you think people don't use it? I hang around near the Empire capital, it's often the most popular ship traveling through these systems. It can explore, it can transport cargo, and of course it can fight. Probably the best all around ship because the price is reasonable.

That Drop Ship on the other hand....

I use the clipper for combat. It is a very capable fighter if equipped and flown properly.

First of all: you can draw a line through fixed weapons. Because of the positions of the hardpoints as well as the clipper's no-so-great manoeuvrability fixed weapons arent an option.

I run a few different set-ups depending on the combat situations that i anticipate encoutering.

My "grief spec" or pirate spec is 2 x C3 gimballed beams on the large (outer) hardpoints and 2 x Seeker missiles on the smaller (inner) hardpoints. This allows me to still have some pips in engines when i'm forced to chase after a target because i can reel off the seekers whilst my beams re-charge. I use this set-up against human players and because the clipper is so fast, i'm able to maintain fire on most ships without them being able outrun me. Due to it's mass, the clipper is good at mass-locking jumping ships as well.

For conflict zones i like to run 2 x C3 Turreted Pulse Lasers and 2 x C2 beams. This setup packs a lot of firepower negates the need to dock to re-arm. I constantly transfer power between weapons and shields as required. I have also run 4 x gimballed beams, but the power drain is little too much.

I run a6 thrusters which are great. they make the clipper pretty agile. and with a max boost speed of 424 I always have the option to cut and run from the clipper's biggest threats which are the Python and Anaconda. One word of advice though: the clippers shields are vastly inferior to those of the Anaconda and Python, even post patch. You need to make owning an A7 shield a priority when owning the ship, especially if you plan to tackle pythons and anacondas.

I’ve also done some exploring with the clipper. If you run with really light components you can have a jump distance of 25 light years which might not be the best for exploring, but it is still pretty handy.
And when you are sick of fighting and exploring, you can run an A3 shield and have 232 cargo. With the extra speed it has it makes the type 7 completely redundant IMHO.

3 non-scoopable stars row and your down to .25 tank leaving your next jump critical for getting fuel.

It's fast and handles beautifully, but the small tank is something you better always keep in mind.

true. but when you get .25 of a tank, stop doing 25 LY jumps and instead keep jumping to the nearest star until you can scoop. You'll get dozens of jumps from a quarter tank and you'd be seriously unlucky to not find a star to scoop from.

But i do see and agree with your point: the clipper is definitely not your first pick as an explorer. All i'm saying is it fits the "multi-role" description perfectly as it still makes a decent exploration ship.

Yes, she has a small tank (if you use "fastest" routes, the range with 15% reserve is less than 80Ly) and is useless (well, at least handicapped) in PvP, because you need to use gimballed C3 weapons.

But other than that it's an awesome ship. Definitely my favourite and I don't plan getting rid of her, ever. :)
You can name the role and she's great at it.
Trading? 240 tons and cheap fuel = profit. And it's safe, because you can outrun anything. After submitting to the interdiction just smash boost twice and you are out of their range sooner than they can deploy hardpoints. :)
Bounty hunting? 2x C2 Beam and 2x C3 Cannon = Elite Anaconda evaporated in three minutes. Plus she can fit class 7 shield generator, if you want to feel extra safe. It has also second best heat management after Dropship.
Exploring? Yes. Great view, higher, but still reasonable repair bill. The only thing is that you have to learn scoopable star types and plan your routes more carefully than you would in Asp.

Altogether, I changed ships like shoes, before, but I have Clipper for a month, now, and staying with her

its shiny, its ok for exploratin and trading, gimballed weapons might work. I think it has pretty good range.

I have one and have seen plenty of other people flying one recently.

You are right, it is ok for exploration, it is excellent for trading, it is almost impossible to overheat (you need to get in close to a star and then hit hyperspace and it handles station exit ship pool very well. The range is not too shabby (depending on having a decent FSD and the rest of your loadout) and it can top 400 while boosting.

On top of all that it handles very well for a large sized ship.

Don't forget it requires Empire faction and a fair chunk of credits to buy one too - that will restrict its use.

Don't understand why you think no body uses it (do you fly in Empire space?).

I fly one. Full "are you nuts" 143M spec with highlights being 7A shields, 6A shield cell bank, 44 ton cargo (lol), advanced discovery scanner, military armor, dual gimballed c3 pulse laser & dual gimballed c2 multi cannon.

its great long range ship with a massive fuel tank. Its expensive bu aas long as u have insurance it can still do a lot of things. Its my eventual aim but for now the cobra-viper-asp combo works great

You don't even need to "find" scoopable stars by jumping from system to system, just look at the galaxy map. Anything main sequence can be scooped from - O, B, A, F, G, K, M.

Exploring in a Clipper with that fuel tank.

(insert I see you like to live dangerously meme).

I finally got the ship tonight, and somehow I have found myself about 1200LY from Achenar... I learned quickly to make sure you plan routes with scoopable stars at least every other jump. =P
