Imperial Clipper

So I'm nearly at imperial rank Baron now, and I have my first 500,000,000 from much trading in my T9, Big Bertha. I'm looking for a multi-role medium really as I don't have one. I want to try the Clipper, but it's not a medium, and a lot of people have said bad things about it to me. Can anyone recommend it? Are there good things I should know about? I love the style of the Imperial ships so much, and I'm going to buy a Clipper no matter what to own one, but I'd like to know if I will end up using it for anything?

I started to use my Clipper as a medium range explorer (with my FC as a base of operations and for the journey). The Clipper handles great in super cruise, looks awesome and is a nice change of pace when compared to my AspX or the Phantom. If there were some cool paintjobs for her as well, I'd be even more happy.

Its makes a great fast cargo hauler.

Pirates don't stand a chance. Great SC manouverability means you shouldn't lose an interdiction, and if you do you can boost out of range before they can even fire a shot.

No other ships quite like it in terms of speed, agility, and cargo hauling ability combined.

You can also replace cargo with passenger slots for much the same effect.

I guess this thread belongs in the Ships subforum... but I'll take it, as I've been thinking about what to do with my Clipper, too. ^^

Yeah basically you got it, the problem of the Clipper is that it's got the internals of a Medium but doesn't fit on a medium pad, so it combines the disadvantages of medium and large ships. Also it has very weak shields for an Imperial ship (even the Courier has stronger absolute shield), and atrocious hardpoint convergence.

However, yeah, as the others have pointed out, it is FAST! And agile! With DD5 thrusters it would even be one of the best Mediums, never mind Large ships. Also the Supercruise handling is excellent.
So think about ways to make the most of these qualities:
  • Piracy: no-one can run away from you.
  • Trading: no-one can catch you, either.
  • Combat: you have a Class 8 Hardpoint: the bow. Just ram things to death.
  • Mining: zip and zoom inside the rings from one asteroid to the next.

Personally I intend to build mine into a bounty hunter, stack up hull reinforcements and go ramming things. In fact it's my next build project. ^^

While i have a collection of ships, the clipper still sees use for two things:

1. Laser mining. It has enough slots to carry everything i need and big enough slots to carry home the load of a normal gaming session here. (Would i do 4 hours mining sessions, I would pick a bigger ship, but for my usual time slots, the Clipper works well. ) And due to it being faster than alternatives, flying from one rock to another feels a bit better.

2. Freeing slaves from the Kumo Crew. Again, thanks to its high number of internal slots, it can bring everything it needs to interdict a freighter, launch hatch breakers and collector limpets, and still have sufficient cargo space. While also being fast enough so nothing can outrun it, massive enough to masslock many targets and armed well enough to hold itself in a fight. Yes, i wants gimballed weapons, but with those mounted it does quite a good job.

Of course, while i use this configuration only once a while when i need merit to get some PP equipment, anybody operating on the wrong side of the law might find the same properties of the ship quite appealing when acquiring cargo without paying for it...

From an exploration point of view I must add that the Clipper also has, IMO, the best view. I love the Clipper's panoramic window, much more than the Lakon bubble cockpits.

It's a cheap fun to fly ship that'll do whatever you want. Stick 4 frag cannons on it and you'll make decent credits bounty hunting or rattling through CZs. Stick a class 4 biweave on it and you'll still get a good amount of armour on it and nearly 200t of cargo space.

i'm mining in clippers since ~5 years. handling is superb.
i also had an exploration-focussed multipurpose clipper in the pleiades. for speed, view and almost only L-Pad station out there.
i'm thinking about building a frag clipper.
generally having a FC on my bubble account makes the drawbacks of clippers l-pad size minimal for me now.
i suggest you try it. on paper you'll always find a better ship, but many love the clipper who have actually flown one.
