Ok, so I did a bit of a loadout change last night, specifically the turrets on the nacelles (both the following were using A class power distributers, sensors and power plant and against a range of PvE target sizes from Sidewinders to Anacondas) :-
.
Large beam turrets : You need to be close to get these to work properly. At about 1.5km or more they tend to fire like they're cross-eyed and miss the target. And they
will overheat your systems fast. Once everything is overheated, with 4 pips to weapons, they will continue to fire and effectively disable whatever other weapons you have in the medium hardpoints. And they cost 19 million each! All in all, not worth it.
.
Large cannon turrets : What can I say. They look good when they fire. That's about it. Out of ~30 shots, they managed to land 1 hit at less than 1km range. When they hit they do some serious damage, but your chances of hitting, even on an Anaconda at 800m, is pretty slim!
.
So I went back to burst turrets. These definitely seem the best out of the lot if you go for turrets, with a nice balance between heat management and actually hitting the target.
.
I'll probably try some loadouts using gimballed weapons on the nacelles some time soon to see how they fare.
