Imperial Cutter query

Minimal shields on a Cutter (6A - 441MJ un-boosted) are better than max shields on a T9 (8A - 390MJ un-boosted), you're comparing apples and rocks. This is to say nothing of the extra cargo capacity, jump range, speed, utility mounts, hard points, distributor, etc that the Cutter has over the T9. You've actually got to work really hard to not see how much better the Cutter is...
(shield values from Coriolis.io)

I do not have the required rank to purchase the Cutter however I know that it is a very popular ship and many commanders aspire to ownership. I was playing about with the ED Shipyard program and entering data for a high spec Cutter and was amazed :eek: to see that even with a 15% discount on the purchase, it would take 756 million to equip and more could be spent. The jump range is less that 15 Ly and the payload is less than a T9 heavy if you install a Shield generator (8A) and a Fuel scoop (5A). So does the Cutter ever pay for itself or is it the just a luxury ship for those Commanders who are financially billionaires and like to indulge themselves in the finest hardware the universe has to offer? I could not yet afford the price tag and I tend to regard my ships as utilitarian objects which will eventually pay for themselves and eventually turn a profit, so I fly an Asp Explorer, T9 Heavy and a FAS all of which have earned their keep especially the ASP. Anyway Cutter pilots fly safe and enjoy :)

A trading cutter does not need a Class 8 powerplant, class 5 fuel scoop, military armor, or most of that other stuff that brought you to the 750 million price tag. You can huild a capable trading cutter for less than half of that.
Here you go, only 250 Million
http://coriolis.io/outfit/imperial_...wRj4yu8g===.AwhMJBGac1VtCyRA?bn=Budget Cutter

970MJ of shields, dual chaff, 322 m/s boost, 704 Tons of cargo, 15LY jump range, and 106 LY travel range for your trade route. You can easily run and jump away from anything long before your shields go down.

You would like my unnecessary luxury trade / mission tank of death build.... 448t of cargo protected by 980m of pure awesomeness!!!! ;-D

trading in that sounds unprofitable and unprofitable =/= awesome
Mission tank? I guess you could use it for that. Still I think that you do not need military armor or an 8A Powerplant.

By the time you build this sucker, you're no longer trade grinding. You're elite picking up trade missions, and/or trading the most expensive cargo you can get 448t's worth.

The profits are secondary to mud stomping anything that interdicts you or lol'ing away from player pirate wings...

I still rolling 4K/t in debt liquidation whenever I choose to stare at 1.7m of trade profit for some giggles.

HMS Impunity!!!!!

i use mine as the ultimate everythign boat. Trade runs, Missions, PP Undermining, even the occasional HiCZ farming (but only in a wing)

If trading then you really don't need weapons either. This is my build for trading. 334 m/s boost speed - yeah! I did go for the 7A life support - a bit heavier but actually made little difference to the boost speed and the jump range using the 7D so I figured - why not? Gives me plenty of time to get to a station if the worst were to happen. 704 tonnes capacity and I could probably make it 712 if I dropped the discovery scanner. 315 mil.

Do you really need a fuel scoop? I'd only add it if I'm going long distance, then take it off when I get there. That'd make 720t, plus the ADS, 8t, = 728t

Armed Trading Cutter.
featuring 720 T cargo, 1618 MJ shields, standard 720 armor, 19,72 LJ/ 13,92 LJ jump range empty/laden and 28 DPS fire power in under 305 MCr;
you can kill anything PVE-AI can throw at you (I would not take that into CZs but any pirate encounters, USS etc. are easy walking here)

Can it pay for itself?
Now some people have found some 4KCr/round trip/ton in less or equal than 15min.
That is 11.5 MCr/hour.
So you have to grind 26,5 hours at the same A<->B trading tour to get the complete price back.
I would call that doable... ;-)

PS: I would NEVER take Chaff with me, this ship is HUGE only ships 3km+ away can miss that with chaff enabled and even then it's hard to.

Why? This is why - http://coriolis.io/outfit/imperial_...074f05050404322f.Iw18ZZA=.Aw18ZZA=?bn=MV Egon

704 tons, 700+ mj shields, lots of guns (turreted pulse above the water line, canon below) and a slightly crazy meat-sack driver. I can usually crack ~3 mil, every ~10 mins in a loop run. That's ~18 mil an hour. And my build isn't really optimising cargo and jump range (I prefer to make people who want my stuff, work for it). Fuel scoop provides flexibility, and usually stays put.

I'm trying out canons to see if they are viable over MC, but 4x MC with the rest pulse laser is ridiculously good. 4 MC's howling away shredding hull/ modules is always an enjoyable experience.

edit: in practice I can hit 1k mj in shields, but the jump range suffers and ~700mj has been more than sufficient to be able to reliably high-wake; or destroy anything stupid enough to pull you out of SC.

Lastly? I really want to try a cutter with a 1x class 4 MC, 2x class 3 MC, and 4x turreted pulse. I have a feeling that's going to be a tad brutal. Roll on 2.1!

Some great information and ideas Commanders. Think I will make a Cutter an objective and work towards it in terms of cash and rank.

I have one chaff slot on my all around cutter just to help defeat scans when smuggling.

And before anyone asks why I'm smuggling in a cutter; when you're flying a 900m+ ship with a 500m balance in reserve, you just do what you like... ALL THE TIME.

I love winging with new players helping them out too. Get to be the big brother on the first day of school :)
