Imperial Eagle Challenge: Hazardous RES Edition

Greetings Commanders,

I'm dropping the gauntlet this weekend and challenging myself to compete and succeed in a Haz RES in an imperial eagle. I want to see what this new AI can do, and more important, what *I* can do. To that end, I'm going to be reviewing as many dogfighting tutorials, tactics, and FA:OFF flight maneuvers as I can. Do any of you fine people have recommendations for this endeavor?

My current combat rank is Expert, and that is probably more or less where I am right now in terms of skill (and looking to improve!).

Goal finish line: The heads of 3 Elite Pilots in a Haz RES (unassisted kills).

Subgoals:
Low RES: 10 kills (unassisted if possible)
High RES: 10 kills (Expert rank or higher, unassisted if possible)
HAZ RES: Take down a wing of 3
Eliminate 1 Elite
Eliminate 3 Elite (Challenge Successful)

I have a good chunk of money saved, so don't worry about my rebuys. I think I can cover it for a while. (Eagles are cheap!)

Vindicator Jones, Vindicator Jones and um, Vindicator Jones. (I am sure there are plenty of others, but his feel most like a flight lessons)

However, Elites actually don't spawn all that often in haz rez's, your much more likely to just end up with endless streams of Dangerous and Deadly's.

If you have not flown a lot using these techniques, whilst I commend your ambition, you will probably struggle with only a weekend of practice, especially in a zippy but not super awesome turning ship. I actually learned FAOFF skills properly in big slow ships first then moved to fast ones, its very easy to miss time/overshoot in a fast ship and find yourself looking down a barrel.

Might I suggest stepping up the challenge from Low up to Haz over a series of weekends? This will give you much needed practice and confidence as you master the needed skills whilst hopefully avoiding insta deaths across the board that will just put you off.

That's a fair point, Stygian. I'm starting this weekend, but if I hit a roadblock on a goal (which I firmly believe will happen!), then I'll take the time to work on it until it's complete. If it takes a weekend or a few weekends for months, so be it! I also plan to keep a record of each goal, how many rebuys, that kind of thing. I'll play with recording as well, but my machine is far from a beast so I'll see what I can do.

I'm rewatching the Vindicator Jones series on combat right now. It doesn't seem to cover FA: OFF turns or advanced tactics using it. Any idea where I can find good resources for that?

For specific master classes on flight assist off, watch this series starting with: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWrvKoUJOEw

Although, you might be putting a bit too much emphasis on using faoff to win, its just a tool like chaff or cannons. The vindicator stuff really focuses on the best practice to approach the fight, maintain position and read your target to avoid being hit and maintain the attack. Key points that a lot of people do not understand how to do. FA off just makes this an easier process.

If you get totally stuck, let me know. I know a highly unusual fighting style that with some patience, should do the trick. Needs a piece of engineered equipment for best results, though.

Step one is complete! The RES site I used wasn't actually low, because there wasn't one in that system. I was playing around in the NAV beacon last night so I'll count that and this together as the first goal. In addition, I spent way too much time figuring out how to do a rudimentary video edit (including trying to find the software for it. I settled on Lightworks), and uploading to youtube. Both are firsts for me.

Please excuse the crudeness of my attempt, and offer any tips, criticisms or snide remarks about my piloting ability as you like. Not listed in the video-
