Imperial Fighters are made out of paper

I was in the warzone at Buricasses fighting for the Empire. The Dominion had a number of Imperial Fighters spawn due to the Imperial Navy's consistent pwnage against lesser opponents. I have to say, facing an Elite-ranked Imperial Fighter is definitely a challenge. The thing is so nimble, maneuverable and agile that it is quite possibility one of if not the hardest NPC piloted ships to keep in your crosshairs. If Frontier keep with their promise to make Federal and Imperial Fighters playable (and hopefully something for the Alliance players too, I don't know why they always seem to get forgotten), then the Imperial Fighter might had been something I would buy. The problem with the Imperial Fighter is that as zippy as it is, you will eventually you will get it in your crosshairs and... well, the shields go down in seconds and there is absolutely no hullage. I literally (I'm not using this word loosely by the way, this does happen) aim my Beam Lasers at them, fire for less than a second and all of a sudden they are right down to 0% hullage. Thanks for my 3,000 credits.

Essentially, we got the intersteller of a hyperactive toddler that runs around destroying the house until a parent catches up with him and puts him on the naughty step. I will admit that the strengths are very overwhelming, but honestly I can't see the Imperial Fighter as being any more good in combat as a Sidewinder due to the hunchback of being far too squishy. At least the Sidewinders lasts for 3 seconds longer in a combat zone. I'd rather fly a Sidewinder without shields into combat zones than sigh up as an Imperial Fighter pilot. They are simply too squishy. I remember someone saying that the NPCs in the game were too suicidal and depressed due to their tendency to run into combat without shields and even no weapons (the latter was an interesting surprise to me). The Imperial Navy's fighter pilots must be suffering from acute depression, because the moment any weapon manages to target them they die in under 5 seconds. Frontier should seriously consider buffing the Imperial Fighter, especially if it is eventually going to playable in the future. Shield and hull strength should definitely be on par to that of the Eagle at the very least. EDIT: At the most, they should be what the game describes them as, which is as 'short range' successors to the Eagle. I read that they have no FSD drives, but the playable version should have one unless Frontier is planning something different for them, such as being fighters they loan to you to use in combat zones temporarily.

TL;DR: Imperial Fighters die in 1 second without shields, please buff Frontier.

This thread is making me ridiculously nostalgic about Tie Fighter. I think I'll go start up the GOG version again.

It's more of an AI issue, a player piloted Imperial Fighter would be very dangerous on it's own, deadly in groups.

If the AI could fight with any sort of co-ordination they'd be a real threat, The light fighters should be using wolf pack tactics, 3 or 4 or them working together against single targetrs.

As it is the AI are quite happy to fight alone and to sit directly infront of you while shooting, so they don't last long.

Even so I can't see how 4 Imperial Fighters = 1 well-kitted Viper, let alone against Pythons, Anacondas, Clippers, Iron Assps etc. Their nimbleness outside of supercruise or hyperspace should remain coupled with the Eagle's hull. It doesn't make sense that the Empire would make a fighter that gets blown up in seconds, unless the game can support about 50 of them in once instance flying along side all the other ships in the game. All Imperial Fighters seem to do is fly around really fast or get blown up.

What the Imperial Fighters lack in defense, they make up for in numbers... It's cheaper to buy them in bulk... You don't want the Empire to raise taxes again, do you? ;)

Yeah right now they do seem very similar to TIE Fighters, apart from the fact that they always spawn as individual fighters in the middle of a battle between Anacondas, Pythons and Asps, which is just asking to get blown up. I still remember in Empire At War the TIE Fighters having no shields (imagine that in ED, sending fighters into combat without shields) and basically being cannon fodder to the X-Wings and A-Wings the Alliance had. The advantage they had was that they spawned from capital ships so they didn't take up unit capacity slots meaning that you could bring along more capital ships and also they spawned quite a number of squadrons so you could send your TIE Fighters on 3-1 battles against X-Wing squadrons and have one spare to deal with the Y-Wings.
