A couple of weeks back or so, someone posted a thread "the day bounty hunting died', and the first thing I thought of was that song, so I put a modified chorus in that I thought up on the spot. Later in the thread Jackie Silver added two verses, which I found greatly amusing.
I have decided to finish it, so here are the whole lyrics:
---
A long long time ago
I can still remember how
That payout used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
I could make those traders dance
And maybe they'd give me cargo for a while
But that day in April made me shiver
With every canister I'd deliver
Bad news in the mail-slot
I couldn't take one more shot
[Chorus]
So bye, bye, Miss Imperial Pie
Drove my Python to the station but the station was dry
And them good ole boys were drinking whiskey 'n rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die
Did you write the book of Lave?
And would you call "this land" "your grave"?
If a griefer caught you cold?
Or do you believe in laser bolts?
Can "Lance & Ferman" be your "Colt"?
Will you teach me how to boost real slow?
See I know that you're in love with him,
'cause I saw you flying round the Rim -
And then you both hit supercruise,
And left me the firefly bluuuu-ues!
I was a lonely space-age Yeager Chuck,
With a tricked out Clipper and a Lakon truck,
But I knew I was out of luck,
The day the bounties died.
[Chorus]
Now, twenty years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on Turner's stone
But, that's not how it used to be
When the Squire sang for the Earl and court
In an Asp he borrowed from Reorte
And a cry that came from you and me
And while the Earl was looking up
The Squire stole his missile tug
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned
And while Walden read the book of Mars
Galcop left us to the stars
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the bounties died.
We were singin'
[Chorus]
Helter skelter in a scooping swelter
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter
Eight light years and falling fast
It landed foul in Timocani
The wizard fried the convoy's key
With the doctor in a sidewinder, looking past
Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the navy played a marching tune
We all went out to find it
But the map would not confide it
'cause the pilots tried to take the field
Federal navy refused to yield
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the bounties died?
We started singing
[Chorus]
Oh, and there we were all in one place
A generation lost in space-age
With no rebuy left to start again
So come on, Asp be nimble, Asp be quick
That Asp sat on a candlestick
'Cause fire is the bright one's only friend
Oh and as I watched him out in space
My anger built up to that place
No follower of the sun
Could bring back those who run
And as the flames climbed high into night
The red stripes brought in arms to fight
I saw Balor laugh in delight
The day the bounties died
[Chorus]
I met a lady who went south-west
And I asked her if that way was best
But she just smiled and turned away
I went down to the sacred soul
Where I'd seen stars line up unfold
But the man there said the music wouldn't play
And we were singing
[Chorus]
Bye, bye, Miss Imperial Pie
Drove my Python to the station but the station was dry
And them good ole boys were drinking whiskey 'n rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die
---
Can you interpret it?
