Engineers Impossible to upgrade ENgineer Access becasue of "Legacy" Modules

OK...unlocked Hera Tani...after the dreaded Kamitra Cigars "grind"
I'm only really using her as a "Stepping Stone" to get to Broo tarquin I'm afraid...
So...as under the old system...I think I'll roll a slew of grade 1 and Grade 2 upgrades...ditch the results until i get to Level 3 1/3 and get the Broo Tarquin Invite...
Hang on a sec...All her Mods (DSS/Sensors/Power Plant/Power Distro) I've already got at G3/4 from other Engineers...and it won't let me convert any of my Legacy Mods (even if all i'll do is ditch the lower grade rolls) becasue I'm only at Grade 1 unlock with Hera Tani...
DO I REALLY have to go fetch ANOTHER ship and upgrade base modules to get her up to G3...or am I missing something obvious...

You can not remote engineer pre-3.0 modules. You have to visit an Engineer and covert them to 3.0 in person.

You also can only apply experimental effects by an Engineer.

If you have pinned blueprints, you can remote engineer 3.0 modules.

There are two quick ways to deal with your issue.

Firstly, there should be outfitting in Hera Tani's base.

You should be able to pick up the modules she engineers (I'm not there myself but I'm at Tod "The Blaster" Mcquins base and he sells all the weapons he can update in outfitting), just store your existing engineered module when you buy the blank new one, do your engineering and then sell whatever version of that module you don't want to keep (you may get better stats by using the new system).

The second is if you're not too attached to the mod on one of the engineered modules you already own, you could clear the mod off in Outfitting, re-engineer it with Hera Tani and you will have your rep.

Yes...of course never thought about swapping modules so I could upgrade un-engineered ones! That was the "trick" I was looking for last night...I KNEW i'd missed something obvious!
In the end I just went and bought a sidey from a nearby base, brought it back to Hera tani and engineered that and then ditched it...
Swapping the modules would have saved me a trip!
Thanks!
:)

Happy to help. Although you should always find a reason to have a quick spin in a sidewinder!

I found myself in the same situation when I grade 5 a module but used a favour (drop 2 rep with the engineer) for a special effect, only to upgrade to Beyond and find I couldn’t convert as I had a G5 module with only 3 engineer rep and no other engineer was G5 certified against that module!

A fresh module helped me out of that jam.

My storey is : Have grade 4 from another engineer, unlock the g5 engineer. But do I need to nerf my grade 4 to grade 1 and rebuild the hole thing at the new engineer ? All grade is under the new system (pulse laser)

If that is the case, then it is double effort for just one grade ouch, per pulse laser I might add....[sad]

EDIT: could buy a new module and get grade 4 and continue with the stored grade 4 , but still going to cost me the materials.

Maybe a compromise could be that any module already engineered under the new system get at pass and can continue from the grade it is at. Made under the new system only :)

I can see what you're saying but you always have to build rep from scratch with a new engineer, regardless of what level of engineering you have on your existing modules. Even if you took it to the original engineer you used and converted it from a legacy grade 4 module to a grade 4 module compatible with the new engineering system, you would still have to build reputation up to level 5 with the new engineer to get the level 5 upgrade.

That part of the game hasn't changed. If you could instantly get 4 grades of rep with a brand new engineer just because you had a level 4 legacy module they could upgrade, that would be an exploit.

If you want to build reputation with the engineer without upgrading modules (and using materials) then you can use the other methods of gaining rep:

Go the engineers base and (depending on what facilities there are) sell stuff at the market, hand in bounty vouchers, sell navigation data.

There are other ways of building rep without just engineering modules (although engineering is normally the quickest way to build rep if you don't have a load of bounty vouchers or nav data already in your ships computer).
