This won't affect anything already discovered, and will make a clear distinction between the different classes without (much) more functionality than we have now. Just QoL.
Basic: 500/1000LS all-body limit, plus detect all major gravitational bodies; suns, black holes. You'll have to visit them to discover planets. (It won't be useless.)
Intermediate: The same as the current ADS
Advanced: No more functional than the current ADS, but will show planet surfaces on the system map. You will still have to scan the planet with a DSS for surface and element composition.
This will accommodate those who want planetary surfaces, and those who don't, and also make the BDS more than useless.
