In-Game Avatar Development

I haven't been able to find much of anything about avatar development in ED.

Could someone be so kind as to point me in the right direction, or possibly let me in on any secrets?

Much thanks and Cheers!

Would love to give you secrets, but we would need to break into their offices in that case! ;) Other than some small "teasers" in the latest newsletter and Dev Diary they really haven't shown us that much yet in regards to avatars.

You can read the latest Newsletter here:

Darn Tinman beat me to it.

I'm only guessing here, that "avatars" would become more prominent when the FPA expansion arrives.

Then, I hope we get to customise our avatars akin to Skyrim or Oblivion character creation process, as opposed to MMO-style creation which consist of 3 styles of hair, 2 styles of beards, 3 preset faces, and a slider for height and weight, and 5 colour variations for hair and beards.

Hmmm perhaps the micro-transaction function could be applied here as well... buy new clothes, new hair, new makeup etc for your avatar.....

Yeah, I expect that at the start we only get to pick basic default avatars (like only a male/female option), and with the expansion for first person character gameplay in ships and stations we would get to actually design our character from scratch.

Do we actually get avatars on release? I had understood our ship was our character. I thought avatars would come with the first expansion. Have I missed something?

It is also my understanding that at the initial release of ED, our character is our ship. We have no "bodies".

Hence, the FPA expansion I guess.

My earlier post was a hope/wish that when FPA comes, character creation would be more like Skyrim and less like MMOs.

Actually, according to the latest Newsletter we will have bodies, even if it's "stuck" to the chair for the moment.

Although we are focused on the alpha testing and then beta through to the retail release of the game, we are also making good progress with planning for the subsequent expansions that will enable you to leave the cockpit.

Even now, the work we are doing with the Oculus Rift support means that you can look around the cockpit – and of course see some parts of yourself in the game as you pilot your ship!.

In regards to future expansions I agree that a Skyrim/Far Cry approach probably will be the best solution. Previously I was hoping for a 3rd person view similar to Mass Effect, but I have changed my mind. First person is probably the way to go, partly because that will keep the experience consistent throughout the game, but also since having a good 3rd person view camera in tight areas, for example the interior of ships, is always problematic.

Show me your wares please...

I'm not too bothered about avatars really, although I would like to be able to put my feet up on the dashboard whilst on an easy trade run.

I hope you're wrong, and we get a decent avatar customisation from the start. Even if we are glued to the pilot seat, we can look around the cockpit with mouselook/TrackIR/Rift.
If I have to look at the same set of default legs every time I look down, it'll annoy me (as it does in Mechwarrior currently).

Only if they have time to do it well, which I honestly don't think they have at this point, unless they have an ace up their sleeve that is. Otherwise it's much better to wait until they can focus fully on fleshing out these aspects in the game.

I've wondered before about somesort of mugshot of avatars on first release, if only to personalise comms between ships alittle.

Frankly, I'd rather a few halfbaked leg-skins to nothing at all.
And yes, I can wait until the expansions for full avatar customisation.

Hope so.
Also hope there is a huge variety, and that you can't upload your own.

Yes, although I think the helmet design in the latest Newsletter will "override" those earlier designs.

Yeah, although I liked few of earlier designs better, I admit they wouldn't cover all head, and thus wouldn't work in open space. I like final design, that's similar to Kryptonian helmets in "Man Of Steel".

Does anyone know when avatars become playable if there are plans for EVA like performing repairs to your ship in space, combat (FPS), or other activities like resource gathering or boarding other ships/stations?

Thanks!
