yes been on that log in but it has no area fr me to choose a commander name also it states i have zero pounds backed and zero credits have sent them an email so will wait for a reply

Greetings,

Unless you backed at the KickStarter level I do not believe you can change your Alpha # number until BETA.

Krollin is correct.
Apparently the opportunity to change your name will come with Beta but seek clarification on that as my memory is fallible.

One of the perks of backing at a certain level was to reserve a commander name, that's what you are seeing. Anyone who backed after the kickstarter finished is stuck with a number until more of the game is up and running so don't get your hopes up until beta.

Same for me. I created a backer account when KS was still up but didn't pledge anything until it was too late. Now my backers login seems to have been disabled.

I guess ultimately you will choose your commander name in game in the "character creation screen".

Can you change the name once you selected one if you don't like it or are we stuck with the reserved names?

My understanding is that each "account" can have three characters. Each character with a different name. Each character name is unique.

So if you reserved a name it's yours to use but if you don't want to you don't have to. So if you reserved Xeoneex as your name it has just stopped anyone else using that. You could now use John Doe, assuming nobody else has already used that one.

They said they would put something in place later to change the name. The former backers app is closed definitively. It concerned the first backers of the kickstarter and the following, before the new store. And welcome in the great family of the Elite.

My guess would be that you can choose any name you want, unless it's reserved. I am wondering if they intend to stop "near misspellings" of reserved names.

I would like to think that the new Alpha backers would be able to get their name before Beta is released.

*Note: I have already backed and part of the DDF.

Does anyone know if the NPC names chosen by backers also mean that others are unable to adopt them as commander names for themselves?

Why? I know 2 David Smith's.

I think the NPC names are seeds. So while I put Hugh Jarse as the NPC name you might easily get Bob Jarse or Hugh Smith. Preventing any players from using a name generatable from these seeds is pointless.

Well... It's kinda like real life:

I was thinking more like, say CMDR BOB JAMESON is a stand up guy. So some blackguard creates a commander B0B J4MES0N and goes around griefing noobs and generally being a jerk. Next time BOB logs in he might find that the universe is a bit less friendly.

I think the "pwned u noob !!1!" message would give it away it was someone else. Also the galactic locality would have a bearing.

One of the barriers to this kind of griefing by proxy though, is that while B0B J4MES0N goes around griefing new players, he gets a criminal record longer than my arm, a bounty on his head bigger than the national debt, and negative reputation in the form of being recognised as a pirate or a murderer, while BOB JAMESON may very well still have a clean record, unaffected reputation, and no bounty to claim.

NPC's can distinguish between the two. It's only players who will have trouble unless they're eagle-eyed.
