In praise of ED's sound design

Jenner

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Ok, so it deserves to be said again: The sound effects in ED are just superb.

In particular I came here to gush about my love of the Viper's assortment of audio. I love love the engine noises in this ship! So guttural...animalistic.... Just superb. Also the engine boost sound effect is wonderful in that it has some metal-groaning/under pressure stuff going on that really makes the afterburner seem way more powerful.

Also I'm digging the explosion sound effects when ships pop and the pinging sounds you get when scooping cargo.

All in all, kudos to ED's sound people! :D

The Viper sounds wonderful. I miss the sound after switching to a Cobra, which I now think could do with a bit of beefing up in the sound department.

No amount of threads about this topic will ever do it justice :)

The sound design in this game is astoundingly good. It has a familiarity but avoids cliche, it is different but not quirky. The sounds of the ships project power and create wonderful immersion ... the list is endless. Ironically, of all the things I hoped for in ED, epic sound design was probably the one thing I didn't have on my list.

If there is any sort of industry award for sound design in games then this game should win it.

I tell most of my friends when I show them the game on my laptop that they really need to come to my house and see(hear) the game on my real sound system to get the full experience.

I like how the Viper sounds, but it doesn't come close to the Lakon T6. I tried this ship for the first time yesterday, and woah do the engines sound like massive, powerful turbines.

I love how Viper engine sounds both in station (t.i. in atmosphere) and in simulated sound scape in space. They are different, but each makes me very alert about having Viper around :) That's a ship to not to mess with :)

I absolutely love the hauler sounds. But I am in a sidewinder which just makes generic rocket noises.

Hear, hear! :p

It amazes me no matter how many hours flight time I've had in each ship, I still occasionally notice new sounds, most recent being the subtle ticking noise after boosting in a Viper.

Yeah, audio design is something that really stands out in ED. I was amazed by it in Premium Beta, and all the sounds were improved even more in SB! Absolutely stunning work, FDEV!

I only hear Sidey, Eagle, Hauler and Cobra so far. Out of these 4 Eagle stands out big time for me, sounds raw and slow like a helicopter or Harley Davidson motorbike at times.

Pure awesomeness!

Yes, me too!

I love the clangs and bangs in the stations and always have my ears tuned to the engines in SC to prevent overspeed. Wonderful audio throughout.

When I discovered the game by watching Youtube videos, the sounds are what impressed me the most. Amazing work.
It's the first time ever I'm actually positively impressed by a game's sound design. Definitely the best I've heard in any game, period. Beyond the quality of the sounds, it's their diversity that impresses ; the simple fact that each ship has its own set of sounds is by itself a notable feature from most other space sims.

I hope the devs get the credit they deserve for their hard work when the game is released!

I'd say Frontier has raised the bar in the industry when it comes to sound effects on ED.

Usually, I find the game sound to be just one of those things but here its noticeably good. I especially love the growl of the Viper engine. :) Its like having a superbike that just wants to be thrashed to hear it at high revs.

+1 on the sounds, when you ease up the throttle in any of the ships it does sound as if there is some unknown powerful force working to move you at speed.
I love the super-cruise sounds, that just fits the action perfectly.

The only thing I find a bit disconcerting, but I understand the inclusion, is sound in space, i.e. explosions, craft flying close to you etc. all of which you wouldn't hear in the vacuum of space.
But of course this is a game and if all external sounds were filtered out then there would be hordes of people on the forums complaining that the sound was 'broken', so for sanity's sake it's probably better that the sound is as it is.

The sounds from outside are simulated by your ships computer. If I recall correctly you'll be able to turn that off eventually.

I agree many times over. E:D's sound design is simply superb. It is so utterly Immersive that I could play with my eyes closed and have a good time

The sound is definitely what made me decide to pitch in and get the Premium Beta.

I fell in love with it, it made me believe in the game :D

A thousand kudos to the sound design team !

It awoke my long standing dream of getting a REAL sound engineer training, something I've been postoponing for years now, in hope of working with you guys :D
