In response to the dreadful 1709 Creators I disabled windows update

Everyone knows about the dreadful Creators Update (1709) and what it did to Oculus VR experience.

Well after a period of about a month after I installed then rapidly uninstalled it my PC started getting ultra-aggressive in pushing me to DL and install it again.

Hourly prompts to update, trick dialogs leading me to set a time to update, multiple shutdown/restart options... leading to a update etc.

I got so hacked off with this I contacted M$ support who kindly disabled the update service via services.msc.

Actually I am more than capable of doing this as I've been 'hacking' windows systems since 3.1! But for some reason my online research into this issue never found this as a solution.

Of course I wont get security updates but my friendly M$ assistant assured me I would be notified when these appear.

My PC has been lovely and quiet since :D

Merry Christmas everyone!

dunno what you have done but make sure you have not opted out of security updates (i anyway doubt m$ would have recommended or even allowed that).

you can easily block unwanted features being installed in "settings -> windows update -> advanced options -> choose when updates are installed". i've delayed all feature updates 365 days, that's usually enough time for m$ to fix their new shiny crap. it's crap i'm never interested in anyway.

Merry Xmas.
I have to say that I have not had a problem with the 1709 update, Elite and my cv1, but I did have to roll back to get my mixed reality controllers to pair and then re install 1709.
PS: I did not even have to change any settings either in Oculus Home, Elite, Mixed Reality Portal, or Windows. I am pleased though that you were able to get sorted to your satisfaction.

I dread the thought of EOL for Win 7

With Win 7 I have complete control over my PC

Win 10 is M$ taking that control away from the user and forcing you to only use your PC according to their dictates while they watch everything you do.

We need a better alternative for power users.

what's wrong with linux?

unfortunately linux didn't get support enough for gaming, so gaming is nowadays in the realm of 'appliances', not 'computers'. a windows machine can be seen as just a particularly powerful gaming console. i use windows for gaming only, i have nothing sensible there, i can format the whole thing any day without second thought.

The "power user" wants to answer the phone while watching tv on the hud in VR playing ED. To accomplish this we need an OS that tries to handle it all at the same time.
Then three is the "hardcore gamer" who wants max fps with all sliders maxed who will take that OS and rid it of every last ounce performance hogging muti-tasking capability to achieve that goal.
As one of the latter, I admit to compromise in order to enjoy the former. As one who played Pong in the day, what we are capable of today is truly astounding so even though I am not a big MS fan, I won't complain too much about just how all of this works-- most of the time.

There's nothing wrong with Linux, but after 35 years of DOS/Windows my desktop is highly customized with a high level of integration between applications that would take a long time to duplicate. And then there's the gaming thing...

I built 2 gaming computers for me and the misses, both still run Win 7. Drive D on both tho have win 10 installed. I'm good till 2020, then we will have to go to Win 10. You know, the OS in perpeptual beta.. :)

Update now is known to disregard ALL group policy settings and known Registry settings.

You cannot deactivate windows update any more...

Shutting down the service itself might work for a while but I expect it will turn itself on in a little while anyways.

Anyhoo.
Apart from. the game panel function s that you can turn off in settings and the bad driver from Nvidia it's been fine for me.

I have been running Spybot Ant-Beacon for near a year now. My current version of Win 10 is 1607 and I only receive security updates.

No issues here with Win10 Creators updates etc.

Unfortunately, some telemetry is unavoidable, even if you turn all the services off.
The only way to be sure is to unplug the ethernet cable, or disable WiFi, depending on your connection flavour. :p

Many other services/products/websites, especially game-related ones also pull system information, installed program lists etc and sell them on to MS and other buyers. nVidia driver updates, Steam etc.
Your individual data may never be sold but they do and will sell sanitised lists of specifications etc, statistics and all that gleaned from users' PC's. Silent data collection of some form is almost unavoidable these days.

Just my 2c worth. Peace.
